Talking Dirty

A thread for waste disposal companies of all types. Skips, tippers, dustcarts etc. As a boy I can recall the orange lorries of Hales Waste (part of RMC), the green dustcarts of Leigh Environmental (had the first privatised contract for West Oxon household waste), and the yellow dustcarts of Abingdon firm J.C Waste (part of J.Curtis Sand and Gravel).
What about muckshifting firms like the recently departed McKenna Plant of Wheatley, Oxon (taken over and bankrupted by the collapse of McArdle).

One of the biggest in the muck-and-rubbish game was Richard Biffa. Anyone know what happened to them and when?

Biffas’ are still going. I think they bought Hales off of RMC not long before Cemex took over.

Just call me “Out of Touch Old ■■■■”.

TJ waste part of TJ transport still going and growing despite a lot of their drivers apparently striving to make excuses rather than money

Not long ago Biffa was for sale. You could have had the company for £1 but you got the debt as well.

Biffas were on the Undercover Boss programme a while back. Not shown in a good light.

Locally W. Wood from Kniveton, Derbyshire, carried liquid waste (some of it nasty stuff!) in MAN eightlegger’s with bulk bodies back in the 1980’s. They did general quarry work but also liquid stuff with rubber seals fitted on the tail door, they did work all over the country, not just in this area. Long gone now of course, houses are on their old garage site.

Pete.

A bit of muck shifting before sheets became compulsory and an ERF stuck on a tip.

what about cleanaways they always had light blue f7s as I recall worked for a bloke who bought a lot of their old motors and he bought their bottle bank business of them, this was back in the 80s, anyone know what happened to them swallowed up by a bigger company I suppose the same old story noadays, fredm

Richard Biffa built his fleet to around 25 trucks then sold up in the 70s thats when it grew to the size it is today i will found out the full story

Cleanaway did the West Oxon household contract for a while after Leigh Environmental. There was also a company called Haul Waste; They ran Ardley Landfill and were taken over by Viridor.
Shanks and McEwan- They filled the old clay quarries at Brogborough and Calvert. Now called Shanks Waste.
There was a firm called Selectface that ran a tip at Enstone, later operated by Aasvogel.
Grundons had tips at Ewelme and Bishops Cleeve. I went with Dad a few times early '90s running clay from Cleeve to Ewelme. Oxfordshire County Council ran tips at Alkerton (Bennies/Oxfordshire Ironstone) and at North Leigh.
