Taking a Trailer to Cannes Sth of France thats 4.5 metres hi

Hi, my name is Pete Minshall and I belong to a charity which is called The IMPS Motor Cycle Display Team (MCDT)" they put on shows all over the UK and Europe plus Rest of World.

We have been asked to put on a show in the Sth of France at Cannes in March 201. However we have recently acquired a new trailer to move our motorcycles and equipment around, the trailer is an old Tesco’s double deck type and is 4.48 metres high and 13.6 long.

The height of 4.48 metres is the problem. Not knowing the full legal rules for EU and France in particular I have a problem as we have been asked to produce our costings for attending the show. This would depend upon whether we can use our own trailer for the run or if we have to consider other ways and means of moving the motorcycles and equipment to Cannes.

Can we take the trailer to Cannes?
Would we need athorisation from France?, or EU?.
Would we have to follow a specific route?.

Any one who can help with this it would be appreciated, I have to get some answers to the event organisers soon.

In France 4.2 metres is ok. I’ve never had a problem running at that height. Anything over that you will need an ■■■■■■, you will only be able to run nationals and only at certain times. It will be classed as convoi exceptional and you will need authorisation and proper routing.

I’m sure there are some members on here that know companies in France that can organise all this for you and I’m sure they will be along to let you know.

Have a look at this thread it might be of use to you.

There is no definded height limit in France, most bridges are at least 5m and if not you get plenty of warning.

Q1 Yes

Q2 No

Q3 No

Bridges are marked if below 4.5m I drive in France in a car transporter. You will be fine on the Autoroute in France. Just keep your eyes open once you come off Autoroute. Shuttle is 4.2 so thats no go and you must declare height to ferry company (P&O) on arrival as not all boats are 4.8m high.

I can avoid it,but cant aviod it. :open_mouth:
That is IIRC banned in France.

Rubbish.
I’ve run 5.0m high loads all over France & never had an ■■■■■■.

I believe the 4.15 bridge is only that on the outside lane. and the other one which can cause you difficulty is 4.2 at Sees.

The bridge at Caen is easy to avoid. You just take the longer way round by going anticlockwise instead of clockwise on ring road!

Hi Pete, this might help, I transport mobile homes all over France, and I always keep the height at 4.5m, your pretty safe at this as all bridges under 4.5 are marked with the height. But be aware, there are certain restrictions in most towns including time bans for outsized loads, but if it’s only height you are concerned with, there will be no problem as long as you stay on the autoroutes, sfae trip.

up till 4.5 metres is practically never a problem

between 4.5 and 5 should not be a problem on 90% of major routes, study the route in the michelin book map all bridge heights are marked

Can’t help much on the question, but it seems you’ll be okay.

But isn’t the IMPS Motorcycle Diplay team the one where the kids are riding the bikes? Great displays, great Organisation.
Weren’t you set up to give youngsters something to channel thier engery into instead of hanging round the streets in London and getting into trouble?

They won’t be hanging around the streets of London and getting into trouble will they?
They’ll be doing it in Cannes instead :open_mouth:

I’ve seen the Imps a few times. They were always extremely good.

Daleyboy, as has been mentioned, is mistaken about the height limit in France.
(In the sticky, at the top of this forum, titled Euro Drivers Info Point, there’s a link to height limits for Europe, as published by the Committee of European Transport Ministers, if you want to check for yourself so you know you whats what).
Autoroutes should be fine, but that’s not guaranteed. I know of a few low bridges on French Autoroutes. Your best bet would be to get the Michelin road map of France, this one I think Michelin A3 Road Atlas. Check your planned route carefully for low bridges. In my old atlas, all low bridges etc are marked with a small standard height limit road sign symbol, but it’s very small and in red only, so you have to look carefully, the symbols are easy to miss.

Davel, what the ■■■■ are you on about?, what rubbish? you do not need an ■■■■■■ over your stated height, I have been transporting wide load mobile homes in France for over three years and I have the necessary permits and route maps defining what route you must take if you are Cat 1 up to 3 metres , Cat 2 up to 3.7 metres and over this it is Cat 3 for which you need a police ■■■■■■ through most if not all towns.

Sapper

Hi jjsl, can you provide an e-mail address and I can advise you further.

Sapper

I have one thing to say , if its over height and you get stopped or hit a bridge
your insurance will drop you like hot bricks , yes you have all these people saying
they travel and have no problems,However it is a laid down regulation of the EU
that Trailers etc unless it is a special load are fixed at 4:00Mts
By all means you go over but you pay more on the ferry for the trailer you have
to tell the ferry company when booking,or else, take the easy route out HIRE
in a trailer or borrow one, is my reply saves any potential grief,
