Tachograph position

I was in a vehicle today that had the tachograph under the steering wheel, the only way to read it was to actually get out the vehicle  surely this is illegal? Yet it’s been fitted and calibrated by a proper centre  Any thoughts on this? And if the driver gets stopped and vosa aren’t happy about the position then who’s fault is it?

Drove an old Renault 7.5, couldn’t find the tacho unit, it was in the same place as yours OP.

Did they never teach you to use your mirrors…

I’ve driven a vehicle with the tachograph in a similar position, it’s stupid and impractical but not illegal as far as I’m aware.

Took a screenshot of where the tachograph should be positioned, this tells me under the wheel is unacceptable

I agree that it is situated in a less than ideal position. Perhaps that was the only realistic place it could be fitted, and tbh anything you need to read on a tacho will only be available to read once the vehicle is stationary, so getting out to do it is I agree not ideal, but it’s not the end of the world.

Guessing a renault .

Pretty sure the first one of these i drove with kneeline tacho was first truck with readout on dash .

Seem to remember its a button on windsreen wiper stalk to access display . .

All very bizarre tho

I remember the gear layout wasn’t on the stick which threw me.

You are worrying about nothing. If the tacho works and is calibrated then there is no issue. I once drove an ISUZU pickup with it under the passenger seat.

Chill out, there’s far more in this world, that is “unacceptable”…

Don’t need to chill out thanks, can’t see the tachograph and therefore can’t see how many hours I’ve been driving, if that’s OK with vosa then I’m happy. Just asking. I could drive for 7 hours and I’d be chilled out but vosa wouldn’t be, I don’t make the rules so I just wanted to know other opinions on the positioning, and it’s a daf

Yes and keep making notes every time the vehicle stops  I don’t know why they bother with cards and tachos, should all just wear watches and when we’re stopped just look at your wrist and notepad and say yeah been driving for about 2 hours.

If you don’t know roughly how long you’ve been driving for without looking at your tacho read out, then you’re better off growing on an allotment…

Chill out. It’s absolutely fine. With an analogue tachograph you would not know to the minute your driving time without some sort of external counter.

I too had a DAF LF with it in this position by your knee, not ideal, but not worth worrying about. DVSA will not care where it is if it’s working…

Once again please don’t tell me to chill out, just asking I don’t need to chill out I’m quite OK tbanks

Pretty damning proof that only DAF make worse trucks than renault .

How would you manage with an analogue tacho?

I had a digital kitchen timer from wilko and jotted it down on back of run sheets .

Had same timer for over 10 years

Fool proof

I don’t think a few people are getting what I am actually asking, I am quite capable of telling the time driving and running an allotment. I don’t care if we have tachograph or an egg timer or if I have to count while driving. But vosa have lots of silly rules and regulations and will stop you for whatever they feel like on the day and I wondered if tachos that are not visible to the driver are another excuse to fine the driver or operator
But I give up it was just a question

If you havent broken any tacho laws how can you be in trouble with vosa ■■

Chill out !
