Tachograph position

Couchwarrior:
I wondered if tachos that are not visible to the driver are another excuse to fine the driver or operator

No, as long as the tachograph regulations are complied with i don’t see that DVSA have anything to complain about, a badly situated tachograph is a bit of a pita for the driver not for the DVSA.

Quite frankly I’d be grateful I can’t see the bloody thing flashing at me!

Thank you for the sensible answer, this was a 56 plate.

After some reading it appears that an analogue tachograph must be visible from the drivers seat, at the moment I’m not 100% sure the same regulation applies to digital tachographs, I’m pretty sure it does but it will take more time to be sure.

If this is right it’s been a legal requirement for digital tachographs to be visible from the drivers seat since they were introduced in 2006, but like I say I’m not 100% sure yet.

Wtf do I know, and I would not DARE argue with Mr Tacho  , but I would have thought that if the position of the tachograph was illegal, the onus, and the fine, would fall on the operator not the driver, so sorry mate it’s also a… ‘Chill out’ from me also.

I agree it’s not likely to be the drivers problem, I imagine that in the event a DVSA bod wanted to do anything about a badly positioned tachograph he would just issue a delayed prohibition notice.

Though I’m not sure how many DVSA bods would really care about a badly positioned tachograph.

There’s nothing in the constructions regs that stipulate where the tacho is positioned they can fit it where they like even on the back of the cab if they so wish . All that is required is.
You the driver use it
The equipment is serviceable and calibrated .

Where did you find that Tach?

I can see a “guide to tachograph fitment”, but that is for M1/N1 vehicles, which I believe is up to 3.5t

That only says there needs to be a warning visible on the dash, and that the mode switch can be operated from the seat.

That is for N1/M1…

Annex 1, Section V (page 22) - Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85

V. INSTALLATION OF RECORDING EQUIPMENT

  1. Recording equipment must be positioned in the vehicle in such a way that the
driver has a clear view from his seat of speedometer, distance recorder and
clock while at the same time all parts of those instruments, including driving
parts, are protected against accidental damage.

Annex 1- Section III (Page 17) (Same link as above)

III. CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS FOR RECORDING EQUIPMENT

  1. Recording equipment shall include the following:
    1.1. Visual instruments showing:
    — distance travelled (distance recorder),
    — speed (speedometer),
    — time (clock).

the maoster:
I agree that it is situated in a less than ideal position. Perhaps that was the only realistic place it could be fitted, and tbh anything you need to read on a tacho will only be available to read once the vehicle is stationary, so getting out to do it is I agree not ideal, but it’s not the end of the world.

Depends on the tacho. Stoneridge tachos are doggy doo and useless. I used a Siemens one that’d do printouts while you were going along. That was useful while clock watching. Then a shunter told me about POA and my life was changed forever.

Iirc it doesn’t matter where the tacho is located so long as the driver can see a speedo .

Cheers for that.
