Tacho disc

Hello all, Passed my test 26 years ago and drove a skip lorry on and of for ten years. Got offered part time work now with a 7.5 ton lorry.
I know the tacho disc wax side faces the needles but theres a small plastic flap inside the lid which has three copper looking connectors on it. Does the disc go under this?
Also the switch outside has a chair for rest, two crossed hammers and a square with a line going from the top right hand corner down to the bottom left, theres no steering wheel symbol like on the old lorry.
What setting is for driving?
Thanks in advance and apologies for seeming like a total ■■■■ but things have changed and memory lapsed

Just realised how to upload

Put it on the crossed hammers and it’ll automatically change for driving.

As for where the disc goes, I think it’s under the brass whatsits

Thanks tom I’ll try that

So you better get on with your dcpc now then, 35hrs need to be done or you are not going to have work next year.
And get a digi tacho card as all the old dinosaur trucks will soon be gone.

Im I right in thinking 3 wheeler that I have till sept 2014 to do the cpc. Ive the grandfathers licence.

You are quite right; you are covered until September 2014. But you are a much more attractive prospect to an employer once you’ve completed your periodic training.

Peter what do I need to revise to do this cpc. A firm near me are doing it every sat. Its been a while since I done lorry work so need polishing up a bit. Is there an exam every day or what actually happens?

you don’t need to revise any thing, just turn up and listen to someone drown on for 7 hrs, there is no pass or fail as the course is an attendance only course. if you haven’t driven for a while the tacho one would be good to start with as there have been quite a few changes with the introduction of wtd :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Practice staying awake when it gets boring

That would be the 2nd driver’s card.
You would place your card on top, without lifting any flaps, with the wax side facing the windscreen.

But you buggers have me thinking now,it’s been a while since I used one of them.

In pic 1 shropsbri I have to lift that plastic flap to get the disc to fit round the centre spindle, I don’t lift the plastic disc below that.

Great news wildfire, the local training centre are charging £50 every sat for the cpc, a 7 hr day for 5 Saturdays.
Is this about average.

If that is an all inclusive price then go for it because you are unlikely to find much cheaper

I wonder if they are doing the same course every saturday = legal for the 35 hours but boring

What do you need to revise for dCPC?? Not a single thing, you can do the same course 5 times if you want to, if you do I recommend you do the driver hours one as it’s the only one worth a ■■■■ anyway.

There’s no exam, no pass or fail, it’s just training, for things like Epic there’s an exam at the end but if you fail it the time still counts for dCPC.

As a example I’ve done all my dCPC and I did the following modules

First Aid
Cattle Movements
Slinger/Load Security
Defensive Driving (or whatever it’s called)
Epic (MPQC)

The Epic course was a joke and if you’ve ever seen a lorry you’ll pass it, much less actually driven one.
I learned a bit on the slinger’s course and Defensive Driving and learned nothing on the Aid course (I’ve been a First Aider for 15 Years), but I’ve got my card and I’m done until 2017.

There are a few fly by nights out there s as with your LGV training don’t spend any money until you’ve been and visited the provider and you’re happy.

All hours are uploaded online and you can keep track of what you’ve done and what you have to do.

Good luck with coming back to driving and keep in mind there are plenty more idiots with Cat C and CE than there are decent drivers sadly.

Crossed hammers = working
Bed (chair) = Break
Square with a diagonal line = Period of Availability (POA)
Whichever mode you have selected, the tacho will automatically switch to Drive (picture of a steering wheel on the chart) when the wheels are turning (and then revert back to your selected mode when you stop).

For ordinary 7.5 tonne delivery work, just set the switch to crossed hammers and leave it there all the time unless you are actually on a break, when you should set it to bed.
