These were the last 1 series scani’s that Brady’s bought, pictured here ready to be traded in probably against more Mercedes.

Bet somebody was right pee’d off to lose that cracking 141 for a Mercedes !
I once drove an ex. Brady’s 110 one of their first HEO 282G it was a real good workhorse and very reliable.

Very true but the only plus side for the merc was a night heater and fitter radio cassette player.
Steve.

An extra sleeping bag would be fine and who needs to listen to a radio cassette with the music from Scania’s 14ltr turbo V8.

I often wondered why they stopped buying Scanias preferring Mercedes instead. Does anyone know how many 141’s they owned?

I think the change from scania to Mercedes was to do with split up of the firm as Bewick explained earlier sons to son.
From memory I think they had 6 and then 4 142’s they bought 6 A reg 112 six wheelers which were the first motors to drop the son in the name, and from then no more scania’s until N reg when they bought about 12 113’s.

The first motors to be named SON and not SONS?
And the bottom picture in newer livery were the last scania’s they bought which look very smart in Brady’s colors.

i would cry my bloody eyes out if they took my 141 of me for one of those horrible mercs i always thougt bradys fleet looked awsome regards rowland

They did look awesome, however the later livery was spoilt by the red stripes on the cab, and the red curtainsiders.

The red stripe originated from the Mercedes Powerliners.
The red curtains were first put onto the low taut liners for work out of mcbrides soap powder factory instead of the blue 15.6 ft height taut liners.

Thanks Steve this is very interesting information, never realised that they had so many 141’s I assume that they were used to pull low loaders out of Vickers.

I remember speaking to someone from Brady’s around 1982 they told me that at the time Brady’s had 50 Scanias, 4 DAF’s and 8 Seddon Atkinsons in their fleet. I was once also told that they owned some fishing boats as well?

They never had fishing boats but worked a lot for James fisher a shipping agent from Barrow that also had all the work off heysham docks which bradys set up HTS heysham transport services.

Brady’s (HTS) did all the work off heysham docks (not the RORO from Ireland) and subbed a lot out to local hauliers, most of the loads were oranges egyptian potatoes Brazilian mahogany etc etc.

Whats the story here having Ellsmere Port on the trailers instead of Barrow In Furness? And they have changed the colour back to blue!

These were old tautliners that went to boalloy to have a recondition, and we’re shunt trailers for Bridgewater paper ex bowaters factory at ellesmere port and just took reels of newsprint into next door manisty wharf for storage.

Thanks again Ste, when I was a teenager I used to love travelling down the ■■■■■■■■ Coast to visit T Brady at Duke Street. At that time a large percentage of their trailers were orange can you remember these orange trailers?

Originally they were orange so the drivers could tell they were the new 40 foot length trailer.

Heres another one dennis, you might remember!!!

Sorry Vic,I do remember the Brady Mercs but I left in Jan '68 and when this shot was taken I was probably running a larger fleet than Brady’s!!! Cheers Dennis.

A larger fleet then Brady’s? They were a substantial company Dennis, between £10-£14m turnover, which at the time is very impressive for a haulage company.

Lets not get into that one again “george” !

Don’t forget they gained quite a few more vehicles when they bought Caffreys out putting them over the 100 mark.

As I’ve said previously Steve,I’ve no desire to get into who had the biggest fleet ! However,it was always a trait at Brady’s( quite harmless, but amusing!)to inflate their fleet size.I re-call my now RIP old pal Malc Woodhouse telling me after a trip he made by train to London with Jack. That if you were to believe the size of the Brady fleet at the time( 1970/1) there would have been a non-stop line of 110’s lined up,continuously outside B & W motors workshops awaiting service.I have to say, nothing in the interviening years made me think differently ! So “georges” goading about who ran the largest fleet between Bradys and Bewicks must remain the subject of speculation ! I know what the later size of the Bewick fleet was, fact, and we could match anything Brady could muster without a doubt. But bear in mind I was very friendly with both Bob snr. and Jack in particular and, accordingly, held them both in very high regard and I always will.So there is absolutely no way i will,or would, get into a slanging match about fleet sizes !! Cheers Dennis.

No slanging match on my part just curious, when Brady’s were at max capacity regarding vehicles jack had been dead a number of years.
Steve.

Regarding T Brady no slanging match what so ever (would I ever), I read the PwC report on them when they went into administration, it listed either 120 or 150 vehicle at the time I’ll try and find it.

It would be good to get the. Official number.

Bear in mind “george” that a “scrapper” shunter to a “suit” is a saleble vehicle and would be described as such in a list of assets, the acid test would be how many vehicles were Taxed and on the Operators licence at the time! Dennis.
