stevecook:
Not strictly a Sykes vehicle - it was their trailer loaded with Styrene and my tractor unit, taken in their Shepley depot:
Nice picture Steve
Styrene,I’ve carried a few gallons of that in me time, always loaded it at BP Baglan Bay.Big users were Sterling Mouldings at Stalybridge and Doverstrand at Stallingborough.
Who did you work for Chris?
I moved styrene for the Sykes group in the late 70s (didn’t get my own tractor unit until 1980), mostly from Immingham storage to what was then ATO at Stalybridge and ICI Slough among others. Sometimes we would have a week running styrene from Baglan to Stalybridge, which meant 5 nights out, but at least there were usually 5 or 6 of us for company.

Steve ,Chris worked for “Evens” you remember they were a pain in the backside as they were 6 potters if you were behind them loading or tipping
cheers Johnnie

Eyup Steve, just ignore him,my 6-potter had a manifold .A.E.Evans I worked for out of the Sheffield depot 1969-79,job was fine except for having to stop and pick Pickfords drivers up on endless dodgy nights out and later avoiding certain Sykes drivers from Sheffield as they were tainting the road tanker industry with their old Crusaders which I used to whizz past in me Marathon (and me Mandator).

What ever happen to Sykes? they had a depot on Workington docks and they had a few garages selling their petrol.
They called it a day in the mid 80s George and a couple of lads moved up to Workington from Huddersfield Pete and Dave but I have no idea if they stayed up there or not. The transport manager took over the bulk liquids side and some of the lads bought their units and worked for him it was run under “Shawfleet” and I think it is still going but Geoff retired a couple of years back Steve might have more information as he lives over that way.
cheers Johnnie
georgeking:
What is the difference between “Shawfleet” & Sykes?
Sykes Group owned Sykes Bulk Liquids and Shaws Fuels among many other companies, in the 1980s they sold off Shaws Fuels and the Sykes Bulk Liquids operations manager Geoff Ellis took over Sykes Bulk Liquids work and formed the new company Shawfleet along with his previous assistant Hilton Large, and continued mostly by using owner/drivers.
Sniffy:
A later Sykes truck, must be one of the last ?
They had around a dozen “X” reg. Volvo F 7s and some 2500 DAFs on a “Y” plate the one on Pattersons thread could have been new to Sykes as I can’t recall the reg. but it seems familiar and I reckon the “Y” plates were the last new ones as I finished in 84/5 and can’t recall anything after the DAFs
