Superdrug South Elmsall... HELP!

Hi

I’ve got an assessment tomorrow and i was looking at the yard on google maps and from what i can see… it’s a flippin left reverse on to bay!

If it is… i’ve basically failed already! i cant even reverse on to a bay from the right never mind from the bad side.

Is it a left reverse from what you can see in the pic or from what you’ve experienced from visiting?

cheers

! You won’t be reversing blind into those angled bays. The others are on your right.
I’d guess the angled bays are drive through from t’other side?
.
Or flip the picture and stand on your head.

If the assessor asks you to reverse on one of those bays on the building just say to him/her in a real situation unless it was against site rules I’d spin it round to reverse from my good side, am I ok to do that or do you want me to go on blindside? If they say yeah do it however you’d do it then happy days. If they say no you can’t spin round go on blindside then just take your time, keep on getting out to look. It maybe there’s more space than how it looks. As in you might be able to pull forward quite along way to get nice and straight with a bay before starting to reverse.

Assessment is always a reverse on to a bay isn’t it? and the bays are on the left when you enter

You can steer left a little, hard right, and you’ll be OK for a straight reverse. Acres of space. You’ll be lined up before you select reverse. There’s a truck length in front of trailers already there.
Things look different on sat view, on foot, or through a windscreen, but that’ll be ok when you’re there.
Don’t worry. [emoji3]

Please tell me this is a wind up!
If this is the standard of the new generation of professional truck driver that’s soiling his pants because he has to reverse onto a loading bay then COVID 19 is the least of our worries.

Not soiling my pants at all and i’m sure it didn’t come across like that. I’m confident enough and looking forward to tomorrow. All i’m saying is, i’m a new driver, reverses aren’t good yet and left reverses are much harder because you can’t see anything. I’m just thinking about what i’m expecting to happen due to being inexperienced.

I would love to know how you was for the first in an arctic doing a left reverse.

I wouldn’t stress about it, looks like a T junc at the end where you should be able to turn round and reverse on the good side. If you have to do a blind reverse then just take all the time you need, get out and look, every 4-5 yards if nec, as long as you get on without hitting anything then no probs, I’m sure the assessor will understand if you explain that you’re a new pass.

Mate, I see so many people talking themselves out of doing things because they perceive that it is out of their comfort zones. I could trot out all the cliches such as “you have nothing to fear but fear itself” or even the Nike favourite “just do it”, but the simple truth is that you posess a licence so therefore have been judged to be capable of manoevering a vehicle. Do not talk yourself out of a situation before you’ve even faced it.

What’s the worst that can happen? They can’t shoot you and they can’t get you pregnant. Just chill and plan for the situation when, and only when you face it.

they can’t get you pregnant

LOL

Thanks bud.

So I take it you were never a learner? You never had your first assessment etc? You just knew it all straight away and never asked any questions from more experienced guys?

I’m guessing the answer to the above is no.

I’d say the problem here isn’t the op asking the questions the problem is attitude of this kind of person who will happily sit and watch someone struggle and won’t lend a hand.

Mr Moaster is spot on with his advice.

But ill give mine at well. Butter up the assessor. Ask them for advice. Most humans want to help and demonstate what skill they have. They will probably tell you the best way to do it if you ask. Just say “as a more experienced driver how would you do this?”.

I doubt a superdrud dc is set up for real blindsiding. H and s wouldnt like it. Reversing comes with time and even the best still mess it up. No one really cares as long as you dont damage anything.

Honesty time… i took 4 shunts to get onto an aldi bay in goldthorpe on the goodside recently. It did have a stupid barrier put back by the forky before id finished and a wagon being loaded. But i didnt care and got on. Im paid by the hour. No one was hurt and no damage was caused. So it was a success.

Forgotten your log in details !!! Rowles

Hi, i agree with all of the above but also remember, which i notice never seems to get mentioned. On most lorry’s the nearside mirrors move, use the function. Good luck think beautiful thoughts and you will smash it. thebeardedone

Do what I normally do in a strange yard. “OK , this is your yard. What is the way to do this? Do I go here or do I go there?”. They will normally tell you what to do.

I’ve seen a few times you’ve mentioned fear of blindside reverses which I get especially as you’re new. My one nugget of advice, not about this assessment but in general, is to practice them. I’ll often find some empty spaces in services clumped together and blindside into the space just to keep my eye in while I’ve got space. Same in my yard aswell. Then when you need to do it because you have to you’ve not got that immediate fear.

Mind you I’ve done a fair chunk of euro stuff and found many places which are designed for a LHD vehicle resulting in blindside reverses being the only option. Theres one difference though in that often people will help over the water instead of sitting in their cab filming it or whatever.

Not sure about Superdrug but most of the high street trucks have rear window and nearside window, just check the curtains are open before you start
