Last night I saw some scrote breaking into the property across the street from me, phone the plod who turned up and took a statement from me. The officer who took my statement asked me if I wanted to attend court if it ended up there, never having been to court for anything how do I get time off to go if I’m required?
A lot of “scrotes” get away with it, because despite being arrested and held pending charges - it then turns out that no bystander wants to give up their time to testify against them, and thus the case gets dropped.
We can’t very well complain about “plod not turning up until tomorrow” if when they DO get the scumbag - none of us bystanders can be arsed to take it further eh?
You get paid for attending court as a Juror, but not as a “witness” unless you are an expert witness, like one of the ‘CSI’ type teams etc…
I can’t imagine many employers giving someone a paid day off “Special leave - paid” for attending court that might not actually involve the perp looting their actual yard, but some third party’s, who when the chips are down - this yard might not give a hoot about.
I had my diesel tank drained (never made off with any) as I was woken in time police came and seized the van etc etc anyway long story short after a couple of months they arrested him and ended up going to court I got summonsed as a witness even though I was fast asleep at the time, the gaffer have me the time off and he had to fill in part of the expense claim form I did get paid for it not a lot but something is better than nothing in the end he only got 240 hours community service though

I you ask your employer I’m sure he will provide the answer to your question…just a thought
Regards. John.
I won’t see my boss till Tuesday.
Hmmmm, not quite sure how that is relevant . I still think the answer to the question you asked " how do I get time off " , is " you arrange for the time off with your employer".
Regards. John.

:
I don’t believe that is correct, my personal experience as a witness was that I was paid travelling costs to court (train/bus fare, or ?pence per mile, if using my car, plus car parking charges) and also I was paid loss of earnings by the court (there is an upper limit applied)
Once I got home,i removed my balaclava, and checked my swag. Turns out all I managed to grab was a George Forman grilling machine,a Playstation 2 and a box set containing Ghostbusters 1 & 2 on VHS.

Em yes you do. Ive attended court around half dozen times as a witness and filled in an expense form and been reimbursed. You get your employer to sign for how much you lost for a days pay, plus travel expenses. And ive never actually been called in a court room either
You HAVE to attend, your boss cannot say no. You will get reimbursed for all travel costs and lost of earnings. I was a witness last year, ended up being informed they plead guilty the night before but still got reimbursed as they provided so little notice.

Not to magistrates court - most likely to be dealing with petty theft type charges as is the case here…
Jurors get the expenses that you’ve described. High court and crown court essentially. You don’t get juries at magistrates court, so I’m not even sure if they are prepared to pay the bus fare of any random bystander who’s supposedly got some testimony relevent to a “local nicking spree gone wrong” as it were…

If your employer doesn’t dock you any pay - the court won’t be paying you more than your bus fare then - right?
