Just started with a new company 2 weeks ago, handed my paperwork in on Friday evening and asked what was happening next week? I was told they needed me to head out on Sunday afternoon, and when I asked what time and what the details were they said I would probably need to leave around 4 or 5ish, but someone would be in touch to let me know and confirm everything. Still haven’t had any phone calls or texts, and the only number I have is for the office, which is closed on a Sunday. As I’m new to the company, I’m unsure what to do! Should I drive the 1 hour trip to the yard in the hope the info has been left in the cab, or just land in at the normal time tomorrow morning and assume the plans have changed and they just couldn’t be arsed telling me?

have you tried calling as the phone maybe switched to direct to a mobile ?

Easy, it is THEIR responsibility to let you know, they said they would they didn’t …their ■■■■ up, you did your bit by waiting for a call. So go in normal time tomorrow, why should you give up 3 hours of your day off to either make allowances for somebody’s incompetence or worse still on a fool’s errand.
If they had forgot to ring you and things go ■■■■ up because of somebody’s ■■■■ up, and if you do as I suggest, I’ll guarantee it won’t happen again.
Yeah, I’ve called the office number - but it just rings off. I was told the same thing last Friday, but as I had just started I hadn’t been given a code for the gate into the yard, so they said they would make sure the unit had been left outside on Saturday for me. Got a call on Sunday morning from a withheld number to say they had forgot to do it, just come in Monday at the usual time! At least they called last week!
Try phoning again and attend yard.
Try the phone number again and log the time of call now ,
then try the phone number again and log call details before departing from home to set out to the yard.
.
Attend yard as pre- requested with gear ready to go,
If paperworks there, jobs a good un and crack on.
If no paperwork / load / etc, go home again and re-attend Monday morning after 11 hours off.
.
Log travel times to and from home /yard. mileage . Be prepared to input a claim for time /expenses occurred.
.
If the yard has security cameras /recording facility, try to get your car/mode of transport and your mug clearly visible in screen shot.
.
Youve done your part and made the effort , if nothing there and no go, it
s not your fault.
.
Questions are,
how much do you want them as an employer ? and, How flexible are you prepared to be as an employee ?
My advice is to go to the yard today. If nothing is going to happen today ,then charge them for your time.
Is the commute there a half an hour each way or an hour one way?
I think I’ve already shown how flexible I’m prepared to be, as for the past week I’ve been doing a completely different job to the one I was told I’d be doing before I started, and had been doing the first week, because they were stuck. However, the job I was started to do pays a higher rate than the one I’ve been doing for the past week, so as far as the question of “How much do I want them as an employer” - that will be answered come pay day! Not to mention the fact that I’ve had a constant ear ache of the missus all weekend for cancelling all our plans for today for whats looking like a no go! There was a time when I would have made a point of heading in despite the lack of a phone call in order to make a good impression, but to be honest I’m starting to wonder whats the point?! As Robroy said, it’s their ■■■■ up. Looking like a few calls could be order tomorrow morning to see what other options are about!
good man , decision made
now take the mrs for the afternoon to make up
Think that leads to another question - where’s the line between “fully flexible”, and “prepared to be taken advantage of”? Or does such a line exist?
jprioredi you would seem to be getting treated with the usual industry standard of ‘driver contempt’…deal with it…move on if need be.

Just to be clear could you clarify as to whether this post is still referring to the job are have we moved on to the subject of you and the missus?
Trust me, the missus is more than welcome to take advantage - I’ve asked plenty of times, but it ain’t happening!
Is it acceptable to move along after 2 weeks? I was in my previous job for 4 years, and apart from the crap rate of pay, I rather enjoyed it. But with a few large bills coming up next year, it just wouldn’t have been manageable on that crap rate! Would 2 weeks with a previous employer be looked at in a positive light on an application form? I’d doubt it!
It’s annoying but it happens. I would say it’s too early to go off on one. We all make mistakes. Keep one eye open on other jobs while you settle in. I worked for a company once where the first week was horrendous. Hated it. Month later really enjoyed it. Sadly he sold his trucks in the end
All you guys that have said go in claim travel expenses etc etc, that is OK in Toothfairyland, or maybe if you work for a firm that has a policy of fairness, and general give and take and fair play towards their drivers, and if you do work for that type of co well OK fine, but in the real world of ‘take it or leave it mate’, and ‘‘he is just a driver so ■■■■ him’’ type of attitude ( that is 99% prevalent in today’s haulage industry) …well I refer to my last post
If they want you in today then the onus is on them to have told you.
It could be that you aren’t fully trusted to attend on your own or hold a set of keys yet. It could be that plans changed after you left and instead of bothering you, they’re trying to leave you in peace.
Turn up normal time Monday. If there’s any flak that you should have been in today then explain to them you hadn’t heard otherwise.

lack of communication … well after last weeks ■■■■ up why didn’t you get any numbers before finishing ■■
You could send an email - that would show that you were ready to go. Something like:
Hi,
I was supposed to come in today but no one has contacted me, so I assume the job is off. I will be in tomorrow morning.

Yup, I agree. You’ve said you’ve been flexible, you have given an inch and they’ll take a mile.

I think this is a good idea. I’d also put in there something about trying to phone in, but the phone(s) just rang out, and that you’re unprepared to spend a couple hours of your own time chasing what could be a non-starter.
Also, to answer your question about putting a job lasting just 2 weeks on an application form, and how bad it looks… then don’t put it on the application form. Pretend you’ve had a few weeks off.
Am I missing something here? They’ve said you’d get a call to come in around 4-5 ish, as I write this its15:36, what’s the problem? I’ve worked for companies that do this & find it best to just sit & wait, chances are they will ring in when they want you. Get used to not being in the forefront of their minds at all times, other things may be happening.
As for leaving after 2 weeks that’s up to you, when I’ve left places in the past, sometimes after days & recently after 1 week, I adjust my CV to show I’ve stayed at a previous place longer & just ignored the latest job.
As for going in before a call, forget it, you’ll get bugger all, apart from maybe laughed at, for turning up on a Sunday with no instruction. If it’s wrong it’s not you’re fault.
