but £2.00 per day for a hot meal, lol not a chance even your average truck stop is charging £5+ for a decent meal with a hot drink, what plannet did the HMRC fall off?
To be reasonably fair they are giving you a tax free evening meal and breakfast if you have a night out, if not, you can pack up at home for £2
The problem being is that drivers count the subsistence as wages. And they pay to park the bosses lorry out of there own money. The parking vouchers are a bloody scam.
If you only did day work, you would then have to pay for your own food at home, pack up, breakfast and evening meals.
But if everybody only did day work the employer and the customer would be screwed! Any employer paying £20 night out money ( or nothing at all ) deserve to be ■■■■■■ over , . being an ex employee, I know that this amount barely covers the minimal cost of being away from home. For the sake of an extra tenner, taking it up to £30 quid, everybody’s happy, I have just put a second motor on the road, and whilst nothing is guaranteed in terms of load security, it gives the driver a sense of security when parked in the services instead of searching for scraps in a lay by or industrial estates.

maybe I am missing something, 99% of drivers who are away all week get the allowance as they still have to feed the wife and kids at home hence the meal allowance they wouldnt be buying an evening meal at home as they have the food … so they are paying twice for same meal if they didnt get allowance … end of the day we choose to be drivers if some want to be mugged off they deserve it!!
sane-scotty:
thats about it yeah. I suppose its my choice at the end of the day.
Am I missing something here?.. you have the choice to either pocket the £20 every night, potentially £100, but you CHOOSE to use it to pay for parking knowing you will not be re-imbursed no offence mate but if I’ve got that right you should have a re-think on your user name

We get £29 n/o all tolls and parking paid even in euroland , but I won’t night out at clacket lane on princable even thou I would get it back
£29 n/o and parking paid is more like it.
As for tolls,no driver, apart from an o/d would pay for them would they?
place i worked when i had just passed my test would not pay parking or tolls so one day when i asked for the £2 for Dartford and he refused i told him i would go round M25 then. Dartford to West Thurrock
you cant do that
give me £2 then
no we dont pay tolls
well im going round then
he still refused so i went round
what a ■■■■ for the sake of £2 probably cost £50 in diesel and time.
Driver pays for a parking, this is a business expense which he reclaims from his boss.
Boss recharges parking cost to customer or the job has been priced to include parking.
Customer ultimately pays for the parking.
In an ideal wqrld yes but only if that easy imagine how many customer invoices would get knocked back with added costs on
I will pay if need load security but if empty trailer then no chance
servicers now around £25 night add 4 nights of this over a fleet
and the way some of the rates are out there especially general then can see why alot wont pay
Id rather go in get shower find somewhere free and quieter to park and alot safer than services
If truckstops etc so half safe and driver get decent meal as well and under £15 i dont mind as much
but motirway services more thefts from there and over 25 for the privilegde then no only on dire emergencies
Germany best idea pay parking in restauant off price of your meal
and i will not pay those parking either as told one driver who said i eat in the cab well park in the services then its free
Thanks for all the advice, tips and amounts bandied around. The upshot is we have agreed a £25-00 per night regardless for meals etc which is cool by me!They pay for any accomodation on top which generally includes breakfast depending on what time I need to be on the road. The hassle of retaining receipts is a thing of the past and I should make a bit extra for those nights out which sometimes can amount to a month at a time.
The company I work for has an agreement with the local tax office (the union were involved in reaching this agreement) & we receive £33 tax free per night out, £37 if in a non sleeper but they don’t run any anyway. HMRC set a national advisory rate as far as I’m aware & the local tax office can review individual requirements.
We get £25 night out money and parking (without meal voucher) paid - although we have to wait 3 weeks to get it back.
It really irritates me when companies say they will only pay for parking if loaded. So in other words, they want the load to be relatively ‘safe’, but don’t give a toss about the driver!
I know as well as anyone else that you’re not necessarily safe in services, but if you’re safer in a lay-by, then why don’t they say that you should park in a lay-by when loaded? Can’t have it both ways. The load may be valuable - but so am I!

As it should be too!
Unless I have fallen off my perch, it is very rare to find me asleep in a layby. I like my home comforts too much, like a hinged seat and some loo roll.
we get 17 quid and higher rate parking paid (withvoucher), i allways park in truckstops unless i am in the middle of nowhere and as far as the load and diesel go ,i stop getting paid when i finish driving for the day so knackers to it ,if it gets nicked it gets nicked im no ones free security guard

You would include the cost of parking in the quote and not single it out so the customer would be none the wiser it was there…most haulage companies will already do this where necessary but sadly not all will pass the money on to the driver actually doing the job as it means they make more money…it’s called business (or biting the hand that feeds you, depending on what side of the fence you are on… )…
