Is it me or have some councils started turning off lights to save money?
I know some councils turn off lights at night midnight to 4 am or so.
Just noticed driving around places 6 7 8ish pm a lot of places seem dark and and streetlights don’t seem.be on .
Or is it me?
Council have just replaced the two lights on our street with these new fangled things that only illuminate the road/vehicle actually parked beneath it. Bloody hopeless, fine 78 years ago in the blackout but useless to see anything beyond 10 ft either side of them.
On the A329 between Reading and Pangbourne a sign informs drivers that the lights are off in the early hours, presumably a money saving measure?

Pete.
Same in lots of parts of London, mostly the parts that really need decent lighting.
Is it my imagination or are LED’s very good for being seen, but useless for seeing with?
How do others feel about lit motorways? I prefer un-lit, because in the dark, every light means something to me. On lit parts, the street lighting is just interference and contributes to fatiguing my eyes.
I do think that roundabouts should always be lit though, if for nothing else, to make them look kind of welcoming!
Councils up here were doing it to save money. Letting light from shop signs light streets… honestly!
Shows you type if decision making at NL council. Saved money for a week or so until the claims started piling in for people falling in poorly lit streets.

M6 jct1 rugby. Wish that put lights or road marking on.the roundabout there. As it’s pitch black can’t see much when it’s dark
All roundabouts should be lit, it’s part of street lighting and signs regulations
Try telling that to rugby council.
If anyone is ever passing m6 j1 when it’s dark. I suggest you make a short detour up slip road round the roundabout and back on to see what I mean.
No street lights and no cats eyes. Been like this for 2 years as I’m aware
It’s quite scary driving along and suddenly all the street lights go out .
In some areas as some of the lights get replaced with modern much brighter lights it can confuse you into thinking that the brighter area is a car emerging from a turning .
Many rural areas only have odd lights on at bends or junctions after midnight .
It does seem very wasteful have great swathes lit up at night with nil traffic on them as well as huge buildings with full lighting on and nil staff present .

They’ll pass it onto Highways England like they do with everything else.
There’s a lights out policy in place here in Rugby though. Lights out between midnight and 5am apart from at roundabouts and some junctions.

I can’t think of anywhere more terrifying to break down, say with your family on board, than on a completely unlit so called smart motorway, basically if it happened in the early hours still dark and you had complete electrical failure (remember some of these modern heaps of cars the door locks will not undo without being powered, and if you have electric windows all around as well?) then you are probably all dead.
As if by coincidence we had all our street lights upgraded on Friday,it’s like an airport landing strip now!!!
You can see in the background the old orange lights we had in the street compared to the new super bright LED ones we have now…
The difference is incredible!!with the old lights you couldn’t see the notice board or the rocks on the grass,or the grass for that matter!

Being a bit extreme there [emoji23] only a few quid for one of them tools designed to cut your seat belt and to smash the window in an emergency if your that worried. Also a brolly in the boot and a big torch wouldn’t go a miss :-')
