I know that that bridge is missing from certain sat nav maps. Wonder if that contributes to some of the strikes.
I know that is not your own personal opinion mate as such, but really? That is used as an excuse?
This forum is becoming like a bloody jigsaw where various threads fit together.
So the bridge is missing from certain sat nav maps.
The occasions where this was the reason (or rather the excuse) one question is obvious
Were all these ‘‘drivers’’ [zb] blind, stupid or both?
All that proves is what I have always thought…some drivers are so totally reliant on sat navs that they go (or indeed are) permanently, dead from the neck up .
So let me clarify this.
If they are not told what to do by their truck designated sat nav ie.‘’ Slow down low bridge ahead’’ (or whatever those [zb] truck things tell you to do. ) they are so numb and stupid that they can not think for themselves, and slow down to stop for a low bridge which is ahead of them, …‘‘because the sat nav did not tell them to’’ Jeez H.
They are even MORE beyond any help than even I thought.
Get these [zb] retarded limpdicks out of truck driving seats now ffs.!
Err, no, that’s why I said, “it’s no excuse”.
Err I know,… that is why I said ‘‘I know this is not your personal opinion’’
I was addressing it as a possible reason or excuse used for hitting bridges by truck sat nav users, who hit bridges.

Fine the operator £50k, reduced to £5k if they can prove that the driver had received sufficient training.
Or make anything over 15ft a vocational licence, like adr for example, to show they are competent. Stops agency drivers with wet ink gettislung the keys and told to get on with it. You should be paid more to pull them anyway in my mind.
Once again the majority will suffer because of a minority of retarded drivers.
I’ve noticed that 9/10 when you see a bridge strike it’s a Scania. I honestly think some drivers just look at what’s written on the trailer and assume that’s their ride height. With the axle raised on my old Scania a 4.2m 13’ 10" trailer rode at 14’ 4" (slightly less but I rounded up). Recently I had a 4.37m 14’ 5" trailer which would’ve put me at 14’ 11", and ideally needed to go under a 14’ 6" bridge. Lowered my axle (and measured all along the trailer with the tape measure I keep in my bag) which put me at slightly under 14’ 4" and gingerly rode under. Warning lights did flash but I knew I was under. However I honestly think a worryingly significant number of drivers would have simply read 14’ 5" on the trailer and rode merrily under the bridge despite the actual ride height being 14’ 11". And given that there’s probably 6" leeway between the bridge height marking and the actual height they’d sail under without ever knowing just how close they were to a strike. However all it would take is the road being resurfaced the next time for them to hit it.
If I was a boss I’d have stickers on Scania’s round by the suzies warning that the axle rides 6 inches high.
The point about the Scanias is a good one.
I don’t drive a Scania anymore, but I still think it is still down to crap drivers, the type of truck should be irrelavent if the driver is competent.
Like I said before, I even see a bridge when driving my car, I also always drop my axle if the bridge is around 6’’ greater than my trailer height, as I’m sure others do similar.
Nothing to do with newbie v experienced either, it was drummed into me while learning…notice all bridges.
It’s all about drivers and steerers imo., with drivers this sort of stuff is second nature, with steerers it aint, …simple as that.
What I don’t understand is why the A5 from Markyate to Cannock is still a trunk road. All the other old trunk roads which are A-roads whose routes are duplicated by motorways have been de-trunked and returned to local authority control; the A-roads remaining that are still trunk roads have no motorway equivalents and most have been upgraded to dual carriageway. The upshot is that there are almost no low bridges left on the trunk road network.
The A5 is a back double, a road that goes through towns and villages (e.g. Dunstable, Towcester) which you might use if the motorway is blocked but not otherwise. The Milton Keynes by-pass is the only high-quality stretch. If it’s important enough to still be a trunk road, the government should invest in getting rid of that low bridge; otherwise, down-grade it. (I know signs don’t show trunk roads and many atlases don’t either, but some still show them with bolder lines, especially foreign maps like Michelin and Marco Polo.)

Because its never full time employees who hit bridges? Do me a favour
I was trying to make the point that agency drivers are often unfamiliar with the kit. Of course full timers hit bridges, and that’s more indefensible than agency drivers doing it

I think you may need to make that 14ft going by the BBC’s example! [emoji38]
I’m sure Maritme were chuffed to bits to be chosen…
There you go, it’s not always the green death!
Wow never seen maritime in trouble!! Their drivers are a sound bunch on the road unlike some! Bad day at the office for this driver ay.
Radar19:
It should be compulsory for councils to have signs at least 1/4 of a mile from a low bridge, I’ve seen plenty that only tell you the height when you’re pretty much on top of them.
The signs for the bridge in the OP start at least 2 miles before you get to it and there are many of them. It doesn’t seem to help.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
this might help??.how hard would it be to do this.■■

10/1 some of those sorry arsed cretins who hit bridges would still not notice it.
A bridge is a bloody great big structure by it’s very nature, that all hgv drivers should notice as a matter of course, if they do not they should not be driving anything bigger than a Transit van.
So no signs, lights, bells or bloody whistles will ever make any difference, these guys are beyond help.
As for Indigo’s suggestion about the Govt investing thousands in getting rid of this bridge
Why tf should they for a few who are ■■■■ poor drivers, the A5 has been there for years, thousands have managed to miss this bridge in that time.
