It’s not the same work, it’s more work, it’s more responsibility, it’s more unloading and loading etc.How do you get it to be the same work, should a transit driver get the same as a class 2?
Actually, after seeing a class 2 job advertised the other day at 6.24 / hr, I think transit drivers might be on more now.
More work how? Granted, it will take longer to load, unload and secure the load but since youre paid by the hour, why should it matter? Its not like your handballing the extra 7 meters of cargo. A class two driver needs to have extra qualifications to do his job, compared to a transit driver while the driver of a longer trailer or a longer combination does not. And the responsibility lies on the insurance afaik.

Not everyone is paid by the hour.
Some of us DO have to handball our cargo - so that’d be an extra 7 metres of handball (note, metres, not meters)
And if you think the responsibility of extra length lies with the insurance company, I hope you only drive a shopping trolley, because when you stop being responsible and you wipe out that car dropping the kids off at school whilst doing a right turn …

The trailer axles would steer on that surely? Would be a pain in the arse to reverse I bet.Why would it be a pain? The longer the trailer the easier the reverse .
Because the axles are furthur apart and as they will be locked straight when your reversing the tyre scrubbing would be bad.

Being paid on mileage is illegal in the UK, as I’ve read on here but if you’re still handballing the load for free, then you’re just thick, not a victim of longer trailers. Thanks for the lesson in english though, english is not my first nor second language but I spent a year as an exchange student on the side of the pond where 7 meters was the correct form, hence my terrible incorrectness. I still don’t get the issue of more responsibility compared to a regular trailer, you might want to try and explain your thoughts through more than just stale personal insults.

being paid by the mile, or trip money is’nt illegal in the UK, or the EU. it is just an urban myth.

I have read on here on several occasions that it was, if it’s legal in the UK it’s still not legal all across the EU.
And if there is the possibility of a salaried driver working longer hours due to the longer length, then what’s stopping the employer burdening the salaried driver with much more work now?
Trailer hights
I had an interesting convo this morning about the hight of some new (teardrop) trailers in the yard.
It seems that some of them are marked up incorrectly, up to 8" out.
The basic discussion was about who’s responsibility it was, regarding both the incorrect hight marking of the trailers, and the subsequent legalities should a driver take one of these trailers out on the road and get pulled at the road side or strike a bridge. The other drivers where convinced that as they’d accepted the trailers where marked (albeit incorrectly) with the hight, they wouldn’t be liable for any events that result from getting pulled at the road side or striking a bridge.
Discuss…

I never said paid by the mile, some people are paid day rates, or salaries.
Loading and unloading the trailer is part of the job, 2 extra metres is 6’ of extra work, if it’s handball, that’s 6’ extra floorspace of handball.
As I said, the responsibility for driving this is down to YOU, not an insurance company.
You ■■■■ up and hurt / kill someone, it’s down to YOU, why do we really want bigger and bigger vehicles with more and more responsibility making fewer and fewer jobs all for the same money?

And ■■?
We have 53 ft trailers here as the norm and in some states 58 ft is allowed and before anyone coments about open wide highways we still have to get into city, town and village streets.

so what’s stopping the employer from giving the driver too much work for the same day rate with the regular trailer? but it all comes down to a horse and a cart doesn’t it, let’s do away with the pesky internal combustion engine alltogether. The biggest reason to give an employee a raise would be a rise in efficiency, a bigger trailer would actually accomplish that.
