spotted that at Workington about 3-4 weeks ago , would appear there hasn’t been much interest. zero hours contract may not suit a lot of people but it would be a foot in the door for a newly qualified driver .or wouldn’t it ■■
Cheaper than using an Agency to get drivers - have a supply of casuals that you can ring instead.
Zero Hour contract doesn’t mean you have to sit around all day waiting for their call - you’re free to do what you want, and work for who-ever you want; same as being on agency.

they look to have had a good pay rise since there pay rates where last on here about a week ago
No they haven’t. When I passed my C+E last October I looked into casual work at Stobarts and the rates were the same as they are there. The regular drivers are still on the same, £7.70 isn’t it now or something like that although they do get the daily meal allowance which probably bumps it up to around what the casual drivers get.
peak_46:
They want you to commit to 18 shifts per month with no commitment their end.
If you have got to commit to 18 shifts per month would that be the same as them committing to give 18 shifts per month. How many agencies commit to that many?

No, they commit to NOTHING. Look up Zero Hours Contracts.

so what would you do? you’ve got 10 blokes working for you on a casual basis, 2 work every shift offered, 2 do 80%, 2 do 60%, 2 do 40%, and the last 2 do 20% of the shifts offered to them, who do you ring first? who do you want to keep sweet? who would you be most ■■■■■■ off about if they left due to lack of shifts offered?
not everyone wants a full time job, if you do, then this probably isn’t for you
I was a casual for stobarts when they had a depot at Gerber in Bridgwater and it was great. You dictate to them when you want to work and not the other way round. I would just ring in and say I can do ‘x,y and z’ and if they had anything they would give me a call or I would ring in the day before to see what was what, and 99% of the time they would have something for me.
It’s got to be in their interest to employ casuals as it’s far cheaper than employing an agency and also you get the same drivers every time meaning the drivers get to know the people in the company and how they work and likewise the company gets to know it’s drivers meaning you build up a relationship and understanding with one another along with trust rather than having some random agency bod who doesn’t give a monkeys.
Sparks have now got the Gerber contract and I do exactly the same for them, been doing it a few years now. I’ve got to know the staff and they know me and they know that they can trust me and that I take pride in what I do, will get the job done and will look after the kit. Needless to say whenever I say I’m available they will always find me something to do.
Regular day driver doing 4/5/6 hr days,30/40 hrs a week on tesco shops
Guaranteed 50 hrs x 7.75 = 387.50
£75 p.w m/a
£25 p.w f/b
£487.50
Flexi driver doing same job/ hrs
4/5/6 hr days,30/40 hrs a week on tesco shops
30/40 hrsx £9.50 = £285/£380
Not so sure this will solve there driver shortage
Silver_Surfer:
It’s just to get blokes in to cover Xmas innit.
No it’s there latest solution to not being able to get drivers,or not the amount they require, old adverts for drivers at various depots were repeated month after month so obviously not filled
It’s just another half hearted attempt at solving the issue of driver recruitment,if it had been £9.50 p.h,guaranteed 50 hrs,£15 per day m/a,f/b then they’d of been in with a shout, but they’ve just chucked in the carrot of £9.50 p.h and hoped that has the required effect( drivers knocking the door down for a job).
I personally don’t think it will have the desired effect, but there again if you listen to 99% of posters on here hourly rate is everything ,so maybe the thought of a rate of £9.50 p.h will have them pouring through the doors( and quite possibility running back out when they get there 6 hr days x £9.50, or there 30 hrs x £9.50 :! ).
Basically its like being on call with this sort of job. Available at a moments notice, but with no pay for the inconvenience. Your be OK until January then the phone wont ring for months! We all been there phone rings 19:00 ish with someone asking if you can do a job, you say ok what time in the morning? to the replay come in ASAP, but i’v been up all day?
