Stobarts have always been about flash motors (although they’re not that flash!), women’s names written on those flash motors, and legions of “Eddie spotting” fans.
However despite their high profile image, the fact is they’re amongst the worst payers around. And to think they used to make their drivers were shirts and ties for the “privilege” of driving for them!
Their website is all “bells and whistles” talking about the “professionalism” throughout, and it’s well known about their big plans for the future incorporating expansion into many other areas.
I’m not knocking the guys who drive for them, it’s a job - particularly in these hard times. But it must have been a bitter pill to swallow, for most of these guys (who are after all on the front line), when they watched that documentary a few months ago about “Stobart the Company” - and yet all the discerning viewers got, was a programme about the overall wealth of the two partners, an insight into their lives including helicopters and sponsored racing teams, and the pathetic sight of one of them failing to understand how to start his latest luxury car!

£7.20 per hour…shameful indeed.
i can only speak for our depot but in no paticular order the drivers seem bothered about
1/how come the same drivers get the same easy runs
2/ then you get the drivers moaning because the same drivers get 70/80 hrs p.w when they cant.
3/then you get the drivers moaning they only want to do 6 hrs per day ,not 15 hrs
4/then youve got the drivers moaning the same drivers get the o/t
etc, etc
they dont seem botherd about posh cars, helicopters, posh trucks, 7.20 p.h, just your usual gripes that you hear in every r.d.c waiting room.
maybee its because since they changed contracts there earning a sight more on a stobart contract than there corby ones.
out of intrest what do you think is a fair weekly wage, yearly wage

Some companies also operate that snr drivers are on set routes the company i do a bit for has this in place since the snr lads have 20 years + service, the newer lads dont have a problem with it as there all paid the same hourly rate.
as for working 60/80hrs a week thats a disgrace if you have to do that just to make a decent weekly wage,i cant comment on what a decent wage in the uk should be as i live in ireland but it has to be more than someone working in a fast food chain.
Look at Stobarts website they go on about professional drivers and all the training they do and then pay there drivers less than someone working in KFC and then say “we pay competive rates”
Dhl at whitwood pay good i think i was on £9.42 first 8 hours then time and a half after £18.84for sunday. Not many firms paying time and half after eight now let alone £18+ for sundays
was on induction for stobarts yesterday and have to say its very thorough, and alot to take in for one day as am only casual worker the full time drivers get 2 days induction, the info package is very good boys and alot of info in there to read up on, i carnt cooment on wages as of yet cos i havent earned yet,
but what i can say they do have big plans and arnt standing still, whether the driver reaps the benefit i dont no, but i noticed alot of the drivers i spoke to had been there for years with the unilever contract begining early next year there maybe be hope, unless it becomes a huge cooporate business and takes over everythink like the rise of tesco in the last 10 years, but as a personal decision i have no choice to pick and choose there aint no work at all locally thats why i have to drive 40miles each day, unless any nice fellow trucker wants to offer me a driving job i am gonna have to chase the hours at stobbies.

Well I work for Royal Mail and so far this year i’ve grossed £30,721 with one more month to go. yes i’m working nights but i get home everyday and it’s the best job i’ve ever had in transport. Would i work for another company now? Never.

same as, been driving for nearly 18 years now & finally settled down into a good job with reasonably good money , but like most we like to be paid what we’re worth , unfortunately many new guys have been rushed through hgv courses & other than the driving they know very little.
Couldn’t believe how little of even the basic tacho rules a another newish driver on my firm knew. they way he was going he’d be having 4.5 hours rest every 45mins driving , so maybe the bigger employers are paying the right wage for the caliber of driver they’re getting
Surely the person doing the training should learn the tacho rules for them selves it is the job of the training companies to get you driving to a standard that you can pass the test it amazes me that people will drive for a living and not know the rules considering how high the fines are for breaking them and with vosa every where its easy to get caught at least there is people like you to point these people in the right direction or they would need a hourly rate much more than £7.20 to pay for there fines

To be fair though, Royal Mail is a dead mans shoes job, Nobody leaves there unless its in a wooden box

“grahamzx6r” you beat me to the post on this one
I saw this vacancy on the JC+ website this morning and just couldn’t believe that any employer had the gall to expect someone with a HGV/LGV licence to be prepared to work for £5.80 per hour, especially with all the other aspects of the job, HIAB trained, weekend work, warehouse work, shop floor work and everything else in the job description
I’m only able to drive 7.5 tonners now because ongoing health problems meant I couldn’t fulfill the requirements for my class 1 medical at age 55, but I’m earning more than that on a ‘trip money’ basis and also get a tax free bonus each week from the customer for being on time. It’s not the best job I’ve had, far from it, but for a non HGV driving job it’s ok and the money is enough to live on.
Just recently there there was a Job advertised driving a 7.5 tonner in the Halifax area doing own account delivery work throughout the UK & Ireland and the starting rate was £8.46 PH There was over 150 applicants and the shortlist for interview included guys who had current class 1’s but were willing to downsize and drive a ‘pudddle jumper’ coz of the rate of pay being offered.
If I still had my class1 and could get a start on Stobarts on the rate they are offering I would give it a go coz it appears that all the extras that they offer can make it up to a good weeks wage but doing what I do now on a 7.5 tonner really makes me think how out of sync the rates of pay are for the different classes of vehicles.
tilerman:
try working for for 72 a day and doing 15 hour shifts and more ya £7.20 looks good then doesn’t it cause this is what we get paid
£430 per week with the tax taken out is an ok wage and if you times that by 4 it is £1710 per month doing a 72 hour a week.
I would do it just to pay the bills and have a roof over my head and yes, i have done them sort of hours when i was living in London and know it can be a long days work.
limeyphil:
what’s wrong with you lot?
£7.20 to £11.00 per hour. average about £9.00 per hour. that’s £135.00 per day. plus a meal allowance, plus night out money.
being a stubbon git won’t pay the mortgage, or pay for a holiday to sri lanka.
hourly pay for truck drivers should be banned. day rate or mileage rate, get rid of the bone idol tossers.

Yep, no surprise there then! (Sorry, not being racist, but it’s true!)

I got in through manpower, there are quite a few of the old school thinking the grass is greener outside at the moment so, you never know. Give them a call.
