Not sure about a go-slow, they break up a journey to get the truck washed.
Wash? What is this Wash word?

Think theyāve been on a go slow for ages now. Theyāre always holding us up along the A43 between Kettering & Stamford as well as across āthe valeā on the '46,rarely seem to be doing much over 30mph; in fact the one yesterday between Tewkesbury & the Alcester roundabout didnāt even manage to hit 30! Wouldāve taken him out of the equation if there hadnāt been 5 lads running heavy between me & him (he was empty or very light laden). Does all seem to be the 'fridges though, ex Innovate contract, that are dragging their heels.

None of the ones who passed me on the M6 and M1 last night were on a go slow. I was in a vehicle which does an indicated 91kph and practically the only trucks to pass me last night were NI registered or Stobart.
What were you in? I left Stoke (1am) to Stranraer and up the M6 to Carlisle like a gust of Hurricane Bawbag, never out the middle lane.
glad Iām not on general, do my own thing every day. work gets done, hours maxed out as much as possible. mr jenkinson looks after some of his stobart drivers
I got out of driving quiter a few years ago if i couldget a job doing 9.5 hours a day in a lorry id jump at the chance, surely the days are gone of people wanting to do 90 hours a week Sun to Sat?
this does seem to be a topic that came up in early dec āsign of the timesā the OP had a few posts on that thread. fishing for something?

Most hourly paid companies regularly have a purge to cut the wage bill, the result is always the sameā¦
They get in such a pickle and so behind with the work within about 3 weeks that it becomes a free for all and mega bucks to be made in unlimited overtime catching up.
Wincanton on the Kwik Save contract used to pay our breaks by the way, also time and half rate on Saturdays even when it was rotaād working day, and proper night rate enhancement before and after 6 oāclock working on top, and of course time and half on everything once 8 hours was up.
Then you could work a week rest day at time and half too plus out of hours extras.
Just thought iād pop that in so you Wincanton lads can give your reps some grief to sort the pay out as it should beā¦
i bet you dont here these drivers moaning on camera when they are filming !

Are there many firms which pay for lunch breaks? - I donāt think so but am prepared to be educated on that
Our lot do, guaranteed 55hrs a week. Paid for breaks just theyāre a bit funny with overtime but to be fair the multidrop we do its very rare if you go over 8hrs a day actual working. For that the gaffer gets clean motors and a brew in the morning.

I can understand why a company would not want to pay for work hours not actually doneI can also understand that a minimum amount of hours should be set for full time employees

I thought the idea of getting rid of trampers was to utilise the vehicles 24/7 in which case that would need more drivers to fill the extra on road vehicle time ⦠wouldnāt it?
We get paid from the minute we walk through the gate to the minute we walk out againā¦usually rounded to the nearest 15 min (in our favour ) first 40 hours at normal time after that time and a half.(worked out on 8 hours a day then O/T rate) any Saturday work is time and half, Sunday double time.
We average about 65 -70 hours a week (obviously some of that is POA )

Every container firm Iāve ever worked for, Mansfield recovery, and all night jobs Iāve done.
I donāt agree with docking breaks, but I take my breaks on the door(s) as Iām on a break as far as Iām concerned, not doing anything other that talking on phone, watchinā lappy etc
As others have said, a break is a legal requirement, but how often have you been runninā low on time, so you just stop in a layby, no facilities etc, and you get docked for the privilage, and chances are youāll still need to stop again for facilities.
We get paid straight through, minimum 11hrs and Ā£2 / day meal allowance, BUT there are drivers who are likely to cost us some / all of these perks by takinā the ā ā ā ā , you know, sit on bay 4hrs then have a 45 break. Even to the point of causing jobs to run late

any driver who thinks a general haulage firm can run its drivers on 9 hrs a day is living in cloud cuckoo land. what are you going to do give the drivers from sherburn a manchester to do then a coke shunt, thats their day finished.![]()

this plan of stobarts is doomed to fail and by the spring they will be wanting trampers again.

We did have problems when I worked for Swifts in the 80ās where we were paid 50 hours minimum plus any extras. Swifts bought in a new MD who decided to cut our pay t save money. the amount of run ins I alone had with this bloke are countless ! Meetings where he would talk of a 10 quid pay cut across the board, even he would take the 10 quid cut.
āTen quid to you is a drop in the ocean when you earn about 10 times what we getā I said and talked all the drivers to reject the idea, then another cost cutting meeting I told him the best way to save money was to get rid of him and his BMW 7 series.
When he cancelled the 50 hours min plus extras we worked to rule. One week of collecting 4 or 5 trucks and drivers that had run out of time at various service areas and paying night out money soon het the company, not only were we being stuck at those places but the day drivers were then very late for their work. The following monday the CEO arrived and gave us a minimum of 60 hours plus extras
Hit them where it hurts.
Not fishing for anything just concerned for ex workmates some of us have hearts u know and donāt want to knock stobbies cos I had 3 good years with them and would be a shame to see them disappear donāt u think cos wot ā ā ā ā would u talk bout then
Are they still wanting owner drivers.
re breaks, where i work we have a bout 15 drivers, a couple do other jobs but jump on driving when we are busy ect, we dont get paid breaks however you can crab your break whilst its being loaded and boss will pay for break then, which i think is fair, i,m getting abreak and boss is getting truck loaded, most days a 30 is all you need so thats all a couple of us take, and then get on with the job, however only 4 or 5 of us do this, others have a full 45 on the road then come back put in break for it to be loaded and then have another 45⦠its funny though cos at xmas we only got half of our ususal bonus, these same guys are the only ones moaning a bucket fullā¦

I donāt get break deducted on my current run, paid 9.5 hours straight through, but thatās because we donāt actually get to take a proper break during the shift. Normally itās 45 minutes deducted on any of the other runs. I think being paid for your lunch break is the exception in most jobs, office workers doing 9 - 5 donāt usually get paid for lunch break.

Yeah, but they also park outside the office, or can go shopping or the post office or whatever, we end up in lay-byās, or, if weāre lucky, a bloody services.
When I was docked my breaks on the airport work, Iād put tacho on rest whilst loading / unloading at jobs so I could then take my 45 when it suited me, not the stupid clock.
I think being docked breaks was to keep the hourly rate higher, which in turn gave a higher overtime rate, but now all thatās gone, itās just pure greed IMHO
Iām self employed so itās simple.
I look at the job, decide what I want for doing it and invoice accordingly.
If they donāt like my rateā¦I donāt do the work for themā¦(and I donāt take the ā ā ā ā or clearly I wouldnāt earn at all, nor do I work for nowt-remember I have to pay my own tax etc).
Sounds crazy, but it can and does workā¦
