bet the drivers that use these steerings knobs are also the clowns that drive around in hi viz vests.
reply from COCO the clown,
whats the problem with this.
It may be ok for you lads that are doing 4-5 hours at a stretch, but think about us poor bu**ers who do half an hour then drop a trailer. we would spend more time putting the vest on and then taking it off.
Anyway mines got that much 5th wheel grease on it, it doesn’t reflect anymore
can someone pass me a tissue this thread is cracking me up!!!
that was untill that person put us curtain tassle’d up drivers in the same class as “agency vest’s!!”

so you get it all over your seat then?
holey moley if its not bad enough you drive in the “agency vest” you know its covered in grease and you still climb into the cab with it on■■? i think i need a lay down!!!
I use one as some drivers are just filthy animals and I don’t want to touch the dirty, grimy, nicotine stinking steering wheel.
If you took a swab of an average steering wheel, I’m pretty sure that would uncover all kinds of nasty things and probably even some ■■■■■ bacteria as well.

Well thats fair enough, it’s a personal choice end of the day. On a side note i cant say i have ever got close enough to a steering wheel to actually smell it for nicotine or anything else…
So what do you do then when you use the air brake or touch other controls in the truck which other drivers may of touched before you, do you wear those blue disposable gloves■■?

Some steering wheels just ‘feel’ grimy and dirty and as for the stench of nicotine…all you have to do is smell your hands.

I carry a packet of anti-bacterial wipes just to wipe down the controls
I guess some of you will mock me as OCD but I just don’t like working in another man’s filth.
I wear my hi vis all the time too, with 5-10 minutes between drops, its not really pratical to keep taking it on & off, and I have never got fifth wheel grease anywhere inside a cab .
And as for knobs, great for lazy buggers and screwing truck round, not so good for doing the job properly.

 Since when does a steering wheel cost £400
when did you last look into the price of LGV steering wheels? they all retail about that, especially if the’ve got radio/cruise controls built into them.
i’ve got a sliverline edition wheel on my 4 series, they have no buttons and retailed at £460 when i looked into a new one.
i agree it is harsh, but i do agree that they shouldnt be allowed, this is a pet hate of mine, i’ve taken over many trucks that have had damaged wheels from such things, which makes driving the vehicle very unpleasant. its a very selfish item to have as not all drivers like them, from a mechanic’s view they just get in the way and hurt like mad when they hit your fore arms.
as said with power steering why are they needed?
I drive ahook loader and when im ■■■■■■■ about lining up on my trailer or a skip they are invaluble, as a rule i dont touch it in normal driving
jumped in the truck i had been assigned today and to my horror discovered on knob on the steering wheel bloody things, i lost count the amount of times i clipped my hand on the knob as as fed the wheel through my hands when i forgot it was there. i did try and use the knob for a few backward/forwards manouvers but i gave up as didnt feel in control of the vehicle manouvering it clutching the knob i could see the accident form
“i hit the car as i was testing out holding the knob while manouvering into a tight space”
even tried using it for general driving but felt like i was over steering on roundabouts and sharp corners.
i drive fork lifts aswell and get on with the knob just fine and thats where i think they should stay IMPO, fair enough if the driver has a disability that requires one but i just feel more in control holding the actual wheel, not as though we do deliveries that might warrant a knob like you see some tippers have them…
prob got the same truck tomorrow so might give it another go, or might just take my wrench with me.
If I was an operator I would make it clear that they were not to be fitted £400 seems a bit harsh. I started a thread recently on this site regarding the legality of them. I like to let the wheel slip through my hands when completing a turn without a lump of plastic whacking me in the elbow. On the list of annoying things they share joint first place with the in-correct use of fog lamps.
