it’s clear as night and day to me that to scrape a wage pulling boxes you need short runs and quick tips , the other thing worth pointing out to anyone thinking of setting up in this line of work is that it must be one of the simplest ways that you can set up as an o/d, and this is reflected in the rates offered, how anyone, even someone thinking of setting up can’t see that is beyond me!
if your thinking of setting up pulling boxes you may as well drive for another haulier and just draw a wage

Having been on this forum it has opened my eyes
Jus a quick question how many litres diesel would you use on a week of tramping work not looking for exact figure rather an estimate so I can figure the profit loss account.Cheer guys an its like becoming a English lecture on here with some ppl
£1000 a week if pulling boxes on short and long haul mix would not be out of line, so if you are going to do this…Sit down and try and decide on running costs of your unit due to its age and condition…NOT on maintenance costs for a new one, then tyre costs…and dont forget that huge Elephant hiding in the cupboard. TRUCK REPLACEMENT PLANNING …and then down time for any reason , and there are lots of little ones And lots of lost time at turn arounds And trailer hire.
So If you aint getting £2200 a week dont bother it aint worth it
I reckon thats a fair assessment !
But its up to you !!!

Everything you have mentioned above I totally agree with I think it makes a lot of sense. 2,200 to 2,300 which they have promised a week is the absolute minimum I would have my driver work for them any lower then that figure it wouldn’t be for a great profit given once I’ve taken out all the expenses and it wouldn’t really be worth me going into. It doesn’t really matter how much you earn a week it all comes down to what your left with after running costs because that’s the money you can take home.
The unit will more likely be a DAF On a 08 plate
By the time you’ve paid your driver you’ll be making peanuts out of it,unless you run on red lol
£2500 per week tramping is what you want else you really should just get a job. £3000 is what most strive for but you won’t see this on traction.
My PB in the good old days was £8500 for 3360 miles per week, one unit, day & night drivers with 3 trailers for the drop and swap. Good luck finding a job like that though.
Nice.

It’s a good deal. You should go for it and let us know how it pans out.
Moose, do you work for a company near Staveley pulling for a french firm
no why do you ask?
i think i know an o/d local to me who does though
My contribution and advice to anyone thinking of subbing is DONT! Some years ago we had a massive dip in the training industry. Not wanting to loose some brilliant trainers, I got sub work on boxes running 3 units. Can’t remember the name of the company, but I think it was 3 initials and based in B’ham. Long story short: knocked it on the head 9 months later and had to go to the bank to borrow £10k. Less stress standing on a motorway bridge throwing £10 notes at the passing traffic. I had only one minor breakdown (stone through the rad but, thankfully, on the m’way about 8 miles from my base). No maintainence issues. Paid the drivers over the top as they were on their normal trainer pay.
It seems clear to me that Maritime and their ilk wouldn’t be giving profitable work away; they’d do it themselves.
I continually wrestle with the prospect of running an artic on training during the day with a regular night trunk to give newbies experience. But, up to yet, no sign of a sensible night trunk. (Unless, of course, you know differently). So, for now, I’ll stay out of haulage.

You have the option to interview them so you can get exactly what your after.

That idea has some merit. It could be useful to companies that are looking to recruit new drivers, they get on the job training before being employed. Just a shame that there are no jobs around.
Go to your meeting with the Maritime dude & say "OK, you’ll guarantee me £2,000, what profit will you guarantee me? & watch him back away!!!
THE ONLY GUARANTEED PROFIT MARGIN IN A MARITIME O/D DEAL IS THE ONE MADE BY MARITIME!!!

And if he lies , Not that they would (haha) , its will just be down to changing circumstances !!! , you will be in so deep that getting out will cost you so much that you will end up losing all…AND THEN he moves to the next mug.
Why do we have this same thread so often…oh perhaps there is a reason !
If the PROFITS were that good they would pull the chuffing things with those trucks that they want you to take all the depreciation losses and risks with , let alone tyres and insurance , using their own drivers on wages and taking the profit.
Wake up please !

I think it is quite clear from this and many other threads on here on this subject that the deal will appear worthwhile when you’re there but as soon as you actually start doing the work you will find the loopholes they have that turn it from something worthwhile into something that isn’t.

So subbie are you taking on the likes of stobarts and dhl or did you just leave it
