Split from BBC Thread. Car licence to Class 1

After 37 years driving heavy trucks in the UK, Europe and the USA I have only met about 40 % of drivers who have the brains to pass such a test so I think the industry is on a looser

There is no test. You just have to turn up 5 times for 7 hours and you get the thing, no questions, no test.

I hope this helps.

With all the help you like to provide coffeholic I thought you would have been the first to post on the thread I started about HGV licences, if not can I suggest TEA!!! (And probably Green Tea at that!!!)

Hope that helps…

I’ve read it but in 1987 I went straight from car licence to a first time pass Class 1 so don’t meet the requirements of your thread.

Not green tea but I had a African Rooibos, Strawberry and Vanilla tea not 20 minutes ago.

I hope this helps.

C’mon coffeholic dont be lame, you of all people have got some form of bollox or wit :unamused: that you can come out with?
If you went straight from car to Class 1 then you must mean the new C+E, so surely you can enlighten us all to your vast experience on the upward struggle to where you are today?

C+E hadn’t been invented back then. No struggle, it’s all been pretty plain sailing, some of which is detailed here and some more in the second book which is titled, [ZB] Me, So Much Bull. :stuck_out_tongue:

You could, it wasn’t until the nineties it changed to LGV and Cat C or C+E.

Sorry pal, there is no way that was possible back then…I know you are talking bollox!!! It was possible to pass a driving test in an HGV 3 vehicle and gain a driving licence (I did it) but you would then have to pass an HGV 2 and then an HGV 1. You could NOT jump straight to Class 1…

When it changed to C, C+E and the rest of it then it was possible to jump but that was not until the early ninties (about 94/5)

Oh yes you could. I did it and many others I know did the same. Not talking â– â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  on this occasion.

Also, it has never been the case you had to go Class 3 to Class 2 to Class 1. If you had a Class 3 you could go to Class 1 without having to do the 2.

You’ve got that arse about face. The introduction of Cat C and C+E put an end to being able to go straight from Car to Class 1 which is why it is now Car (limited to 3.5t maximum) - Cat C then add the +E. Prior to the introduction of those licences you could go straight from having a car licence to a Class 1 with just 1 driving test, you did not need to do a rigid test first.

I got my car licence in 1977, could drive up to 7.5t with it which is what I started on in this game, and my Class 1 in 1987 and they are the only two driving tests I have ever taken in my life.

I will await your apology. :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry pal aint no apology coming fae me…

I have looked on google and cant find a get out clause for yerself but I am still sure that in the year 1987 if you wanted an HGV 1 licence then you had to do the 3, 2 1 tests?

You have never had to do 3, 2,1. You could go straight to 1 from an ordinary car licence or if you already had a Class 3 you could go straight to the Class 1 without having to do the 2. The 2 added nothing more than being able to drive heavier vehicles with more than 2 axles, it didn’t add anything else.

From what I can recall that is not correct, (All this was in 1987) I passed my 1st test in an HGV 3, then a couple of years later I sat and passed an HGV 2 test. From what I can recall I was told I had to legally and that was from a reliable goverment source and then I had to sit andhad to pass an HGV 1 test. We can chat about weight limits on licences and years on when we did whatever as long as you want, but I’m telling you that in 1987 you could not go straight from CAR to HGV 1 in one go, and I would be shocked to learn that you could ever achieve this as licensing was a fairly new thing back in the 70’s/80’s.

Hay1908:
mmmm you keep editing the posts I quote. (All this was in 1987) I passed my 1st test in an HGV 3, then a couple of years later I sat and passed an HGV 2 test ( I had to legally)

Only if you wanted to drive rigid trucks with more than 2 axles, not as a stepping stone to a Class 1.

Hay1908:

Doesn’t matter how shocked you are, you could prior to the licensing changes go straight from a car licence to a Class 1 with no other test in between.

You haven’t had any responses to your thread yet because people who did Class 3 - Class2 - Class1 will be in the minority, or did it in the army because they wanted it done that way not because it was a legal requirement. Most people would have gone Car - Class 1, or Car - Class3 - Class 1, or maybe Car - Class 2 - Class 1.

I don’t mind waiting for the apology, take your time.

not quite true, on an old class 2 you could tow a drawbar trailer behind a rigid vehicle, that you now need c+e for
when the licences changed they had to put a restriction on to stop old class 2drivers driving artics whilst still being able to tow trailers!

Coffee is correct. He and many others went car to class1. I paid to put a friend through it when he needed a job in 1995. 3,2,1 was a choice not a requirement. 3 for 2 axles, 2 for more than 2 plus trailer, 1 for artic basically.

Which you could also do with the old Class 3 so the 2 did in fact add nothing more over a Class 3 than heavier gross weights and more than 2 axles and what I wrote is therefore correct.

True, you could do wobble and drag on a 2 (maybe even a 3 if it was a 2 axle prime mover) but not artic. Always seemed strange to me that my mate drove one allover Europe but couldn’t drive my artic (legally anyway :grimacing: ) 10 feet as he was only class 2. :unamused: :unamused:
