The 2 added nothing more than being able to drive heavier vehicles with more than 2 axles, it didn’t add anything else.
not quite true, on an old class 2 you could tow a drawbar trailer behind a rigid vehicle, that you now need c+e for
when the licences changed they had to put a restriction on to stop old class 2drivers driving artics whilst still being able to tow trailers!
True, you could do wobble and drag on a 2 (maybe even a 3 if it was a 2 axle prime mover) but not artic. Always seemed strange to me that my mate drove one allover Europe but couldn’t drive my artic (legally anyway ) 10 feet as he was only class 2.

Coffee is correct. He and many others went car to class1. I paid to put a friend through it when he needed a job in 1995. 3,2,1 was a choice not a requirement. 3 for 2 axles, 2 for more than 2 plus trailer, 1 for artic basically.
Sorry, although correct in what you say but we are talking about 1987.
Twas always a tad bizarre that you could go from a Chuvvit or Mini(other stereotypically bad period cars are available) Pass your test in a chopped down 16 tonner with a fifth wheel and straight 6 synchro box tugging a 30 foot flatedd. Then be legally allowed to jump in something with a real box and big enough to do some damage in
Hay1908:
mmmm you keep editing the posts I quote. (All this was in 1987) I passed my 1st test in an HGV 3, then a couple of years later I sat and passed an HGV 2 test ( I had to legally)
Only if you wanted to drive rigid trucks with more than 2 axles, not as a stepping stone to a Class 1.
Hay1908:
but I’m telling you that in 1987 you could not go straight from CAR to HGV 1 in one go, and I’m shocked that you could ever do.
Doesn’t matter how shocked you are you could prior to the licensing changes go straight from a car licence to a Class 1 with no other test in between.
You haven’t had any responses to your thread yet because people who did Class 3 - Class2 - Class1 will be in the minority, or did it in the army because they wanted it done that way not because it was a legal requirement. Most people would have gone Car - Class 1, or Car - Class3 - Class 1, or maybe Car - Class 2 - Class 1.
I don’t mind waiting for the apology, take your time.
As and when I have exhausted my research I will of course openly offer my apologies, but I’m still sticking to my guns cos I cant find anything about it at present. You are right cos I was in the army back then but I’m sure everybdy had to go through the 3, 2 1 process… mmmm■■?

The Class 1, 2 and 3 tests were introduced late '69, as far as I recall, or it may have been early 1970, and from then until the change to Category C and C+E in 97 you could go from an ordinary car licence straight to a class 1 or if you had taken a Class 3 test you could then go straight to class 1 without having to do the 2.

From what I understand from drivers I know who got their licence(s) in the military that was the way they did it, taking each class but that was only their way and not a legal requirement. If you had been doing your licence in the civilian world back then you could have passed your car test at 17 in 1987 then waited until 1991 and gone straight for your Class 1 after your 21st birthday. If you had chosen to do your Class 3 after your birthday you could then have gone straight for your Class 1 without doing the class 2.

I had been doing a couple of years 7.5t driving when I did my Class 1 but if I hadn’t I would have started the training with the biggest thing I had ever driven being a Mk1 Ford ■■■■■■. The only other cars I had driven prior to driving a truck was a Hillman Imp and a Ford Fiesta because from 1979 to when I started in this game in 1984 I had lived most of that time in central London and didn’t need a car.
not to sure of trailer on class 3, my father had a class 2 which changed to c+e with restrictions when the licences changed,
i went straight to c+e from a car in 1995 and i think the changes that put a stop this were a bit later on around the time you could no longer drive a 7.5 tonner on a car licence a 18 years old
now its gone the other way again and you could go from no licence to C+E in 3 tests in 3 days at 18 years of age

Not quite. You have to wait for the licence to come back with the provisional for the next category so 3 tests in 3 days is not really possible. I know the brokers tell you that you can do back to back Cat C and C+E but you cannot as you need to wait for the Cat C to come back from the DVLA with the provisional C+E on it.
Thankfully i too had experience in smaller stuff first. I wasn’t even allowed out in the company van until I could tie a dolly Then they made me work my way up to bigger stuff. Peed me off at the time but given that at 21 and a few days I had my licence and within a few weeks was thrown into my first 40 footer and pointed toward Dover I am eternally grateful

I also went from car to class 1 in 1983,had a little brown book as your licence
1984 for me Saviem wih the above mentioned 30’ trailer. Car to class 1. 3 years on rigids, then 1st load in an artic 55’ trailer loaded with steel, into the middle of Newcastle. Thanks P O P. Have taken Bike test since and also had the Brown license.
