Hello Zippoterry, how could you forget Rex the shunter. I’ve got some photos of Johnny Mace with his F88 and I’ll put them on here when I get time. I was at his 65th birthday about three years ago with a lot of the old boys you mentioned, and had a good night. I’m told that Macey isn’t too good at the moment and I’m sure we all wish him well. Best regards,Haddy Gt.Yarmouth.
Hello … I remember Spinks well but not any of the drivers names I was with Allisons Tpt Dundee who changed to Allisons Freightlines Dundee thats when they started to take over one company after another starting with Kemps of Leslie in Fife then Browns of Beverly another mob in Hawarden in north wales and a couple of little companies in London spinks were Green and Red and had some 40 ft spread axle trailers (new at that era ) around 1965/6aor maybe a bit later it was that long ago we always got well looked after when we went in for a back load but when i left around 70 i lost touch with all of it then Allisons were swallowed up by some other big fish and started up again in Dundee as Tayfreight the rest is history

I knew an old boy from Sandy, Beds, he told me he used to be a Day Man for Spinks. They used to change drivers in the bypassed bit of the A1 at Biggleswade and he used to run down to London, tip and reload back ready for the Night Man to take over back north. Ronnie Ashwell was his name, finished up on Marshalls concrete out of Sandy.
Hi Steevo, that old boy from Sandy, Beds was my dad, Ron Ashwell. He worked for Spinks for about 3 years as a day man and then went to Hoveringham Gravel at Wyboston as a tyre fitter for a further 3 years, he had a few jobs all around lorries and haulage after that and you are right he ended up at Mono Concrete - later Marshalls Concrete from 1973 until he retired in 2001, where I have also worked since 1974 and am still there today. Sadly dad passed away in 2003. It was good to read through these forums and see that he has been remembered. How did you know him?

I remember Spinks as Spinks Interfreight years ago.
Wincanton used a subbie in the 90s and they were called Spinks for a start but then later on known as Hutchinson.I think it was Gary Hutchinson who was the owner, and their yard was somewhere near Scotch Corner.
If this is the same Gary Hutchinson I’m thinking of it could be Stan Robsons Grandson,I think he carried on with Robsons after they were bought out by UG,however it could be just a coincidence!! Cheers Bewick.
Hi John, I’ve got some photos of the sister motor to that F88 with a concrete beam taken in Atlas Works at Lenwade Norfolk. The late Johnny Mace had it and “The Colonel” had the one in the picture. There were only two Volvos based in Norwich as far as I can remember, the rest were mostly Guys.
The problem is, I cannot get them to post on here however many times I try, this happens with several photos in my collection. Some I can post with no problem and some won’t post at all. Any ideas? Regards Haddy, Gt.Yarmouth.
Photos sent to me by haddy
Many thanks for getting them on John, now others can enjoy them too. Regards Haddy.
Bewick:
Were Spinks bought out a far east group called Amalgamated Rubber, who also bought Allisons Freightlines of Dundee? Could be wrong but the old “brain cell” is defo re-calling something along those lines!!May-be another “old sage” on the site can give me a lift!!! Cheers Bewick.PS and not up the “jacksie” with his boot either!!!
You are quite right Mr Bewick, Spinks were taken over by Amalgamated Rubber & Industrial Services at about the same time as Allisons of Dundee. Both fleets ran with Amalgamated Transport Services on the headboard, and the old names on the doors. Stan Spink sold Guys as Harrowgate Hill Garage, Darlington, and his son stayed in the business which went bust in around 1972, and resurfaced as Spinks Interfreight who took over some of the fleet, and was bought by Cecil Attwood who owned a company called Dufay Bitumastic. Allisons, I believe became Tayfreight. This was a difficult time for north east hauliers as quite few went to the wall - McPhees, Wilf White to name two, and Harry Brunskill and Bob Cawthorn sold up
IIRC

IIRC Harry Brunskill restarted at this time as BAC,(Bishop Auckland Carriers),i think he ran this company living in Jersey.

My dad drove for Spinks round about 1971/72…not that sure. I used to go with him in the green and red Guy Big J. At the time they did a lot of gas pipes due for the north sea gas which had been found.
My dad was Big John Ward and we lived in York. Usually he had the unit home except odd weekends. Unfortunately he died some years ago and I didn’t really get to know any of the drivers.
I remember Spinks had quite a large yard.Regards Chris.
Hi Chris, I know this quite a while after you posting it but I recognise your dads name, did your dad drive a 6x4 F88 lowloader for WH Plant services in York ? Regards Tony H.
Anybody used to work for them. Did you know Colin Hall or Tarzan who worked for them. I knew both of the lads but sadly they are no longer with us. Any info or pics would be really good. Thanks for looking
