About ■■■■ time !!
I notice its those prats at BRAKE who are the only ones against it
The advanced driving people are for it = jolly good show
Won’t make a scrap of difference.
So instead of travelling at 40mph with a queue of traffic behind me made up of drivers who are incapable of overtaking, I’ll be travelling at 45mph with a queue of traffic behind me made up of drivers who are incapable of overtaking.
It doesn’t matter what speed heavies travel at, there will always be a queue of traffic behind.

With many NSLs now being reduced to 50 then increasing the LGV to 50 would make a BIG difference
I agree with BRAKE that increased speed does result in more accidents, but what they fail to mention is that its the inappropriate speed of some ■■■■ in cars carrying out unsafe manouvres that causes the majority of these accidents, not LGV’s driving at 45 or 50 on an SC.
Personally I reckon a combination of an increase to 80 kph and safe periodic passing places installed would solve the congestion issue.
As a side, does anyone think the dual carriageway limit should be increased, given that most trucks are limited to 52 or 53 anyway??
I don’t know about you lot, but I’m paid by the hour.
So . . . being able to legally travel at 50mph over 40mph on a single carriageway means diddly squat to me .
What does worry me, is why this little worthless snippet is in my news of the day !
Was it planted there to mask that our glorious leaders have just passed a bill to the Lords that will make it extremely difficult for an employee to sue their employer if/when they are injured on the job?
What better way to pacify & distract the knuckledragging truck drivers could you think of?

Fiddling about with speed limits is similar to re-arranging deckchairs on the Titanic, it won’t make any difference to the underlying problem.

I sort of agree with this… In the meantime, before we actually hit the iceberg, it would be nice to stop having to fear a camera van parked behind every bush I pass, or over the brow of each hill I struggle to get over…
Unfortunately, it’s simply a drop in the ocean of more efficient transport operations in this nation of remarkably under-developed transport infrastructure!

There was a bit in the news story about ‘stimulating economic growth’ meaning you will be expected to get more done in a day because you will be allowed to go faster. And if you don’t then your employer can ditch you and you won’t be able to sue them

Aahh I see. So why is Rog so excited about it?

Sorry ROG but I agree with Thrustmaster on this having driven in Ireland where the limit is 80kph for trucks on a SC, you still get a queue of other vehicles plus the odd “kamikaze” who will try to overtake in the most inappropiate place!
Plus if everybody is limited to 50mph on a SC, this will penalise the “few” who do know how to make safe progress on todays crowded roads
Great news, shame BRAKE are sticking their nose in AGAIN.
Look, there are 2 different types of A roads in this nation. Some of them you wouldn’t dare fly along with a full load on at 50mph. Both of these pics I’ve dragged quickly off the internet just as an example. Both are ‘A’ roads. Both are totally different. Both are classed as the same when they are not.
This is one example…
Then there are the safer, wider, straight A roads which you could quite comfortably do 50mph with a full load on.
The limit should be left at 40 but relaxed on certain appropriate roads (such as in the latter picture posted above).
All that would be needed is a new road sign that states that the 7.5t+ limit isnt in force.
Said it several times before, leave A roads and other limits at 40mph and reclassify the fast trunk A roads to AA roads where you can do 50mph, problem solved with minimal expense and full flexibility to make it suit the roads appropriately.
Just make it 50mph and leave it for the driver to decide whether the road is safe to do 50mph or not.
In fact, whilst you’re at it, just get on with going over to metric too.
Agree with Kerbdog’s point in his pics. I’ve always said this needs to based on the width of the road as well as other things.
While not relevant to heavies it’s interesting that limits in Scotland could be coming down in quite a few places
“Ideally this change should be introduced in a series of trials and pilots first so that the real impact can be assessed before the change is made permanent.”
do they do this on purpose? How out of touch do they need to be?
99% of trucks travel on the limiter on single carriageways as it is, they’ve done it for years.
