Speed limits could be raised on s/c

99% of the heavy trucks on the A82 between Fort William and Inverness drive like lunatics at Brands Hatch, I would welcome a purge on that road to curb the mad buggers :imp:

Just as an aside, a 45MPH speed limit would be interesting as it would require a change in the law AIUI since all existing highway speed limits in the UK have to be a multiple of 10 (MPH). Any localised change to HGV SC speed limits will potentially open a small can of worms IMHO, with people denying knowledge of a lower speed limit etc.

the speed limits should be the same for all vehicles, including motorways 70mph for cars, 70mph for trucks.
that’s obviously too much to ask for. the polititions and do gooders won’t agree to it, and neither will the jobsworth, i’m on hourly, can’t do this, won’t do that tossers agree to it.

Phantom Mark:
Said it several times before, leave A roads and other limits at 40mph and reclassify the fast trunk A roads to AA roads where you can do 50mph, problem solved with minimal expense and full flexibility to make it suit the roads appropriately.

I actually agree, and I think all cars sold in the UK should be limited to 70 same as us. I was out near Newbury today along a country road doing 40 in a 14 Tonner, yet again those with a deathwish were there, overtaking round bends, up hills, you name it…and not a copper in sight of course. One car even overtook into oncoming traffic…

They couldn’t really do that as they would have to spend a fortune on every signpost and change overy map. The idea is correct but just a slight change is all that is needed. Just like on the a75 you see them HGV 40 signs (basically put there so that you have absolutely no excuse when Dumfries & Galloway are using you as a bank roll) they just need to put signs up on the major trunk routes saying HGV 50. It would be a lot easier than replacing every A road sign for an AA road sign and changing every map and sat nav. They put a few signs up on the m621 saying HGV can use any lane so the signs would be ok as most truck drivers do take notice of signs

40 is mind numbingly boring, don’t know how anyone can do it long term unless they get some perverse pleasure from the queue of poor frustrated sods behind.

It always bugged me that 40 is the law for jobsworths, yey they immediately speed up to an illegal 55 when a dual carriageway appears, still the job has always attracted weirdos.

Suspect we’ll all be doing 50 everywhere soon including the motorways, it seems many of our fellow licence holders can’t keep their vehicles on the road or avoid crashing into others at the heady heights of 55, so i fully expect all lorries to have 50mph limiter adjsutements in the next few years…won’t make any difference mind, you can’t polish a turd.

Country and its roads are full, and i don’t see immigration slowing up in the next 20 years, so slowing everyone to a crawl it will be…except for those who can afford to travel on the yet to be built Zil lanes.

I don’t think the cost and logistics of supplementing probably less than 200 roads with signage is that great a cost in the grand scheme of things tbh, we are after all only talking about major and suitable trunk roads ■■ As for sat nav and maps, that comes as a phase like any road network addition, it catches up finally and people who use those things at worst will be doing 40 instead of 50 if they are not using their eyes ■■

Fwiw I find that 40 is so boring and mundane that it actually lowers my concentration levels compared with 50, that is just me tho probably lol

I for one, do stick to 50 on duals, and it too is mind-numbingly boring. Some of routes we do involve no motorway work at all, so we have no excuse to do 56. One of our lorries recently went in for a service or something and came back with the speed limited adjusted down to 88kph…it used to be quite nice to drive, now its horrible. My boss suggested that all lorries will get reduced limiter speeds in future…great.

I would have said that doing any constant speed for a very long time can be ‘boring’ - when in control of that vehicle

Not heard of many people on a train or passengers in vehicles that get bored when it does a constant speed for a very long time so that means it is a personal mindset issue when in control of a vehicle

Knowing that can get the driver into the right frame of mind so it does not become boring

Outgoing personalities have the most issues with this due to the lack of stimuli

I have no problem with sticking to a tad over 40 (40-44) when there’s no-one behind me, but then again I’m a right boring c–t. Plus I’m on a (low) hourly rate with the agency anyway so the longer it takes the better. It’s pretty obvious you could safely go faster on most of them (roads suitably wide like the a9, or a96, or a75 etc…) like everyone else does. But I have no reason to bother myself with breaking the law, and I certainly don’t get paid enough to risk a fine.

However, what I don’t enjoy is the queue that forms behind me and the crazy antics that soon follow if I don’t pull in every now and then to let them by (including trucks).

And if you don’t hate me enough… I also stick to 50 on duals. No problem with that either. Just set the cruise and let it do its thing. I personally find it much less stressful than constantly striving to overtake others at 0.000002mph. Usually they all just fly past me instead, I’ll flash them in, and since it’s a dual, everyone’s happy.

I’ll only go flat out on motorways. Licence is (and will be remaining) spotless.

Dont really give a toss if they raise it or not, i do what ever speed i feel is safe, sometimes 35 is plenty on a single, other times 55, depends on the road, the weather conditions, how heavy the lorry is and what the load is.

It will never happen anyway…

40mph causes a conflict between vehicle classes. While i agree there will always be a queue behind no matter what the speed at least at 50mph its moving!!

The arguments against upping the limit are due to a increased risk of accidents but the fact is majority do 50+ on A roads anyway and sitting at 40 with a queue in tow only results in frustration and people taking risky chances to overtake.

Modern vehicles modern technology old fashioned limits.

Agree! :grimacing: whip speed limiters off, and let us overtake in the outside lane " HAVE A FREE FOR ALL " as most cars seem to be doing 55 mph " TO SAVE FUEL ON THE MOTORWAY OR TOO SCARED TO OVERTAKE IN THE OUTSIDE LANE " let’s race paddy to the boat! :open_mouth: :unamused: :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing:
