CM are interested to know if the introduction of speed limiters for vans has caused any conflicts or problems out on the road?
I did a day with a tyre firm in a Renault Master a couple of years ago, brand spanking new, it had always been Sprinters before when I had done agency in the past and these people like you to get a move on. These were limited to 62 or 63 mph and I felt there were not dangerous, but probably annoying to many other motorists. Certainly a quick overtaking manoeuvre of a truck got dragged out too long, as in overtake and back in, turned into a long line of cars waiting to get by. After a day in one I felt more tired that normal and was mostly unimpressed, I felt it it should be limited than 70 should be the limit. If there was a reason it should be set at 63, then I never got it, just seems odd and i felt I was getting in the way every time I overtook a truck, not to mention not getting all the load off due to not having a jet powered unlimited Sprinter.
Limiting large vans to 56mph is ridiculously dangerous IMO, particularly for the drivers of the vans. They now have no means of escape when they get caught up with larger vehicles. I find this a particular problem when Motorways merge or when there has been a sharp hill that slows larger trucks but doesn’t affect the vans who have a much better power-to-weight ratio. The traffic ‘compacts’ and wheras previously the vans would have had the ability to sprint past safely they get stuck and the bigger stuff ends up tripping over them.
I know that nobody has to sit on the limiter but I personally would have limited trucks to 56mph, 7.5tonners to 60mph and large vans to 65mph. That would allow safe spacing of vehicles of different sizes. However, I have no doubt that, (like most things) some ■■■■■■ in an office stuck in front of a computer who has never done the job has done some ‘interesting’ research that says 56mph for vans will save the planet, improve journey times for CARS by 0.6% and eliminate accidents totally from the motorways
.
Can’t say I’ve noticed any slowly-overtaking vans especially as I tend to trundle along below the max if the situation allows. It may seem unusual to start with, but as they become more widespread people should get used to treating them like larger goods vehicles, e.g. see one up ahead, get ready to overtake (thinking about motorways). Until then they may well wonder what’s wrong with white van man driving so slowly.
Without doubt it will and has caused conflict somewhere on the roads, more and more companies are now limiting their vans but in my personal opinion if a vehicle has to be limited either by law or for economy reasons I think it is stupid to limit the vehicle to less than the legal maximum allowed for that vehicle on a motorway.
brados:

Yeah I think your right there mate.
i drove a iveco daily on a limiter and found it fine this was limited to 63 mph but it did go a little faster ad no probs overtakin but i was on the a19 and didnt hold up the cars to much poss only mr bmw
once this becomes wide spread the car drivers will be complaining, it is bad enough that trucks take for ever to pass each other, now we will have to spend time passing vans as well, or visa versa. I cannot understand where they came up with this idea, Coaches are safe at 65mph so why aren’t vans, what about van derived mini buses? the whole thing stinks of muddling by people who don’t have real jobs.
our company 5 merc vans have limiters set at 62mph we deliver morning rolls around s/w scotland find it not a broblem my run a lot of back roads and the A75
Lyreco transits are limited to 56mph , its like having another lorry pass you. Ive seen a Lyreco van overtaking a MRS lorry from bathgate all the way to airdrie on the M8. You can blame both drivers but maybe the van driver wasn’t used to the limiter i don’t know but it was ridiculous.
If all vans went to 56mph the roads would be chaos!
Limiters are the biggest problem! Speed limit on motorway for trucks is 60mph WHY are we restricted anyway?? Trucks vary from 52 - 57 as a rule which is always going to cause problems. Also, numpty drivers who give no consideration to anyone behind them and are slow uphill but let weight take them to warp factor god knows
I drove a 58 plate Sprinter a few monthes ago and it was limited…
…to 80mph
I’ve been doing some volunteer work as a community transport driver on van-derived mini-busses - some of the fleet are limited (62 mph) and some are not - so long as you drive with some consideration for others, it’s no biggie.
Whats the problem?
It’s just another goods vehicle with a speed limiter!
The only problem is the idiot-with-a-car-license who drives them & has no patience or courtesy like us ‘professional’ LGV drivers!
LMFAO
in the day Paul Martin TPT sprinters were limited to 80
after boss worked one Saturday and wondering why he was passing everything in sight
at nigh on a 100 LOL
limiting vans to 90k is daft
the +3.5s need nothing less than 100k
and be stickered up front and rear
Some of our Sprinters are restricted to 85mph…Plenty of speed thank you.
I saw a small post office van (corsa-van size) the other day witha sticker saying ‘limited to 70’. Aren’t we all?
Limiters on vans are a pain but no more so than they are on bigger vehicles.
I’ve been driving 6.5t Iveco vans for the past four years and find the biggest problem has been with the lack of mechanical adjustment.
I had a 55plate without limiter which would hit the bottom of a hill at 100kmh and go over the top at 100kmh.
I currently drive a 58plate which is limited to 90kmh.
Hit the bottom of a hill at 90kmh and your lucky to get over the top doing 80kmh.
It seems like the 58plate is meant to work at the same speed as the older van but the limiter will not allow this and by limiting the speed,we’re not getting the best from the van.
I’ll often drive the 5 tonne sprinter at work, looks exactly the same as the 3.5t ones so from the outside you’d never suspect it’s plated higher. I find it’s the other road users that cause the problems and get annoyed as they think I’m sat at 90kph for the fun of it.
