I am sure you all drive to the speed limits for your class of vehicle but just in case heres a heads up on a truck/car camara that caught me out on the A40 Cassinton it behind a bridge.
From now on ill be sticking to the limits and taking the abuse from the que of angry drivers behind me that think i’m driving that slow to be an a hole or to get more money. :frowning:

We ALWAYS stick to 40 on the A420, nice to know we’re right in doing so :grimacing:

The Carrington Expressway in Manchester is a classic. Single-carriageway road but classed as a motorway. What is the speed limit for trucks over 7.5 tonnes ?

Same applies for the Aston Expressway A38(M) in Birmingham

It is signed 50 MPH, this did stump me when I first started, I thought it would have been a 40 SC but Motorway regulations apply, so as ROG said, it is 60 unless otherwise signed.

…and watch out for that one neatly positioned (though not hidden) on the A1 South (single carriageway) at Purdey Lodge. A smidgen over 44mph and your nicked Son…

Those cameras on the A420 have been there for years, I also think there are two just outside Swindon before he Arch railway bridge but they have been out of action for a while. As for the difference between lorries and cars the answer is def yes and that was about 6 years ago on the A303 on the hill going up. 50 in a 40 despite the fact that just after the camera
i was below 20 they just ignore it moneymakers. Nothing done about the people who overtake crossing the double whites coming down the hill. I expect they are too difficult to catch :imp: ( 1 ticket in 40 years not too bad). If thats the worst i ever do i wont lose any sleep over it.

I was told they have been turned off. I have been racing up and down there at least 4 times a week for the last couple of years. Never had a problem. I have noticed there are a lot of 40 mph merchants on there.

Those would be the ones on 9 points before the switch off. Wiltshire is turned off but I dont think Oxfordshire is.

A tip to the wise folks there are at least 4 fixed camera’s on this stretch of road and in our depot we are now into double figures for tickets recieved in the last fortnight. Some of them are just after dual carriageways end so be careful if your travelling this bit of road. They are all in 40mph class limit single carriageway stretches and are on both directions. :open_mouth: :imp: And no I haven’t got one…yet…

That I know of.

Thames Valley Police are one of the most enthusiastic users of speed cameras in the UK from what I’ve read, and more and more cameras have been retro-fitted with induction loops which can differentiate between cars and trucks so be careful.

I did post on this forum a foolproof and guaranteed way in which the driver of an articulated lorry can get a speeding summons annulled, but unfortunately the posting was deleted and I can’t be bothered to type it all out again.

I got flashed by one about 20 months ago on that road. Its posted as 50 mph and I was doing about 45mph at about 2 am. 2 flashes and a nice letter in the post to my boss. 40 is for me now.

Wayne.

Does this mean if you are doing 50mph on a single carriageway an LGV would trigger the camera where a car doing the same speed would not? If so are these cameras the norm?

Some cameras have been retro-fitted with induction loops- you can see them, they look like the grid which causes traffic lights to change as you approach them. A diamond-shaped grid of newly laid tar, where it is obvious that wiring has been laid beneath the road surface, then backfilled.

These cameras can tell that a truck is passing, and flash at the lower limit.

Irrespective of the 50mph speed limit sign on the A420 it is still an A class road…!!! therefore HGV’s are on the 40mph rule…
The same can be said for the A4 Hungerford - Newbury, if you leave M4 at Jct 14…hang a left at bottom…long straights,be warned PC Plod is known to sit with his laser guided hair dryer…!!!

I had Nat Express coach right up my ■■■■ other week, trying to coax me into going above 40mph…

I got the V’s from this pratt…bet he has 9 points on his licence…guess his next bit of paper in his wage packet will be a P45…!!!

On a similar note…if there is a 3 lane carriage way (A46 Coventry Airport) is it 40 or 50 mph for HGV’s ■■? Think about that one…!!

It doesn’t matter how many carriageways it has in each direction, if there is a visible separation between the two carriageways like a good glass verge or even a barrier then it is classed as a dual-carriageway and dual-carriageway speeds apply, unless it is specifically speed limit marked at 30 or 40mph.
