Spanish Drivers do not load or unload under new agreement

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain’s truck drivers have called off a three-day strike during the week leading up to Christmas after reaching an agreement with the government late on Friday, the national truck driving association
It said the agreement means drivers will not have to load and unload goods from trucks, a “historic claim of the sector that benefits working conditions.”

The strike had been called from midnight on Dec. 19 to midnight on Dec. 22. Truck drivers had accused the government of ignoring their grievances and clients of insensitivity and exploitative behaviour.

It’s a win…

For drivers, or is it?

Unless demurrage becomes enforceable by law or contract then, the chance of drivers waiting hours for one pallet or twelve boxes to be tipped/loaded will go through the roof.

You have 75 minutes from the time of arrival to tip/load the vehicle after that it’s £75 ph (including part hours).

I don’t remember ever having to load or unload my own fridge in Spain - i expect you were the same Mr.Larf

Surely demurrage is enforceable today?
That there is so much competition, (the free market) that few choose to write it into contracts, doesnt mean it isnt possible.
.
Or are you suggesting a Gov enforced law?
.
When I`ve been waiting (not fridges) for long times it is often because the Boss chose to take a good paying load available later, rather a poor paying load ready now. A rational business decision.

Choosing to have a huge contract with supermarket, knowing that a precentage of trucks will be delayed, and costed into the base rate, with no need for demurrage is also rational. No need to micro-manage each delay and argue about it. Just accept that “stuff” happens, and factor it in.

That’s a good…

Point. As soon as I typed it I remembered getting loaded almost immediately/pretty quickly/after everyone had come from lunch/dinner at most locations in Europe. 9 times out of 10 they’d open a bay door and tell you to get on it as you drove in. But, that’s because supermarkets like fresh produce on their shelves. Missing a boat or getting in a day later knocks thousands off the value because the ‘sell by’ dates can’t be changed.

I have been held up for hours loading frozen though. Why would they rush, these prawns have been at -30 for last 9 months, 4 more hours aint gonna hurt.

As for 26 pallets of dishwasher tablets for example, what’s the rush?

Don’t remember any Spanish job offers even when we did and it was under German management that put us to work on the dock.
Luckily they aren’t lumbered with Brit unions who would have agreed to the warehouse duties in exchange for an hour’s pay for break.

Some way…

Of ensuring that hauliers are compensated for time lost waiting at warehouses, RDCs etc. It’s something that I’m not familiar with because hardly anyone ever charges it. They just sit for hours somewhere ■■■■■■■■ about how the delay has ruined the profit for the day or the next day’s collection.
As with most things, it’s pointless unless the system works.

I can’t see English drivers sticking together to get things like the concession the Spanish have. As discussions here have shown, many drivers are quite happy to tip/load themselves.

I dont

know if it

will be of more

benefit to national Spanish drivers.

The international ones tend to relay and change over trailers.
Well the big firms anyway.

Not done general haulage type work for many years, late 70`s to be precise as I remember it"continentals" back then very rarely did anything more than open the doors or strip the tilt, ready for the delivery point to do the unload /load. Often it was “me chauffeur” in what ever language they spoke.
