Woah what a thread! :open_mouth: Great stuff, keep it up… It’s took most of the night for me to browse this lot!

Not a haulier, granted, but this Roadrunner originated from your neck of the woods… It was my dad’s pride and joy (rest his soul) Reg number B 475 BNY (cardiff reg?) Operated on the manchester run from 85-90 out of it’s base in Warrington, Cheshire, then Memory lane cakes closed that depot  Does anybody remember seeing them knocking about?

The last known remnants of the company… A rotting trailer now used for storage By iIlott and son’s recovery… :frowning:

Wasn’t Memory lane part of Meritts the bakers? Either Wonderloaf or Sunblest?.

morning all,
i have no idea who owned memory lane  ,during the mid-80’s,you would see their sk mercs.one after the other on the m4,24/7.good input all round lads  .
regards andrew

Memory Lane Cakes were independant of Merrets/Allied Bakeries. Over the years they have been bought and sold to various food manufactureres. I used to deliver liquid egg to the Cardiff and Warrington sites.

Hi all
I remember delivering a load of butter to the Cardiff depot when I drove for Glyn John Transpot in the lats 80’s. We had a yard full of tautliners and what did they give me to load it on?..a 40 ft flat!-had to be careful not to crush the 10lb packs when roping over the sheet! I think the butter came from a cold store in Cardiff docks so didnt have far to go,still, good job it wasnt a hot day!!!

Memory lane cakes are still going in Cardiff on Maes Y Coed road with Allied bakeries.
Neil.

Thanks Neil, yes, but i think it’s now owned by finsbury foods… I emailed them to see if they had any more images as i’m hoping to restore an old roadrunner and livery it up as pictured above, but they never responded, despite my offer of them using the vehicle for free promotional work if they needed it… :frowning:

Hi Paul, I’m pretty sure they were affiliated with wonderloaf in the 70’s, as quite a few freshly liveried FG’s and “D” seried fords had the wonderloaf livery “ridges” still visible through the memory lane livery in certain lights!

Hi Pete, that sounds about right mate… My father worked out of the Warrington depot, and the cardiff based “trunkers” were latterly mercs, with a few MAN’s, prior to that the heavy end of the fleet was mainly rolls powered Marathons.

Warrington never got the Mercs, but the mainstay of the heavy fleet were roadtrains, a few old marathons, and even an ancient Mandator! (the driver said he’d leave the company if he was forced to drive a “new fangled roadtrain”) He got his way though! The mandator was re-cabbed, and painted up in the latest livery! After he passed away i’m pretty sure the mandator had the chassis lengthened and it turned into a wrecker.

I’m sure i have an image Of an old Marathon in MLC’s older livery… i’ll have a rummage. It’s really frustrating for me… I had stacks of old photo’s of the fleet from years ago, i managed to find just the one image pictured above when i cleared my dad’s house out last year after he passed away… I know the signwriter (when i do manage to restore a suitable roadrunner) will want more than just the one pic i now have…

i worked for ■■■■ raymond up at stormy down.ther was a big water tank way up high and bob philips climbed up it and painted “silent was here” on it.it was meant for me as the boys reckoned i talked a lot.it was there for years.tom fat [bobs dad ]was the foreman and shunter in the abbey.j& m was next door.they used to come in and use our phone as they didnt have one then.■■■■ used to go spare.dirty ■■■■ {dereck picket started after me.gordon williams from bridgend.eric coventry came for a job but ■■■■ told him there was nothing going.i was with vale transport when ■■■■ built his new garage on village farm.we brought all our own bricks down from london brick for that. i think the steel ramp mentioned was dicks and we had it taken down pyle.i was with ■■■■ 5 or 6 years.gwyn raymond was just a kid and his brother steve was very young.john muir was another driver and the old lag was tiny.anyone remember tiny.the police used to come up stormy and practice on the skid patch there.next to j + m.we used to as well.i had an old austin cambridge with no mot and i used to screach around in that.the fitter was martin greavy the irish boy.good fitter but you didnt want to cross him.boy could he put some guinnes away.we used to go to the cornelly arms on sat aft.mrs used to play hell.they were the days.the green atki in the photo is holloways.jny41k and jny42 k they were brand new.i would have had one if i hadnt had a row with davy john and jacked in.he was the manager and elvin davids brother of blue line.what a character he was.i love the photo of ron howells in xwn.pity poor old ron died.he was a good mate of mine.

atki, at a local carnival.can’t figure out whose though?and no,steelboyf10,it’s not one of joints :smiley:ai cap I think that Atki . is one of Holloway Port Talbot .They were green with a maroon chassis …

are you sure M8, looks like one to me, even with those “bobby hrse” white rims…as Ken with the wireless would say!..I agree with the comment about saving an FH, but they fetch strong money for export, I would think they will be like the F7 / FL10s…wendy houses, all gone when we want one…lets have some pics of project pete…

hi steelboyf10,
a couple of photos of project pete’s new rear wings.

yes its one of holloways two new atkis.JNY41+42K.i jacked in just before the came.pity we couldnt get a close up of trailer tyres as they were nearly allways bald or wire showing.i went back to vale transport and tidy gear.holloways were one of the [special rate]hauliers in the abbey and used to get first loads.trouble was they couldnt afford tyres as well.

Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave , i have an idea that Atki was ex Elliotts of Newport who did quite a lot of Monsanto work . The Hereford registration stands out as an ex of Scandrett of Leominster possibly. regards kk
