Yes Dave a bygone era.My father really enjoyed quarrying, gets in your blood so to speak.I loved going with him as a boy, quarries always operated mythical beasts like dumpers and loading shovels. Never saw them anywhere else. Two photos I forgot to add previously. One is a front shot of the Dodge being loaded by Dad in a 22 RB.The next again at Cwmynyscoy a new Dodge with driver Bert Pugh.

Hi Rich,
The quarries this way had Ruston Bucyrus navvies.Nash Rocks were still operating a 38 RB up until possibly the 80’s.I will ask my neighbour who has worked in what used to be their quarries for over 45 years. As you say,a fascinating place to go as a kid, seeing all the different machines.
Cheers Dave.
hello andrew.
i think the yard you mean is on the right hand side if you are heading for wentloog from rover/lamby way,i am positive the yard was owned by ely transport ,there was also a little cafe inside the gateway ,i think that ace earthmover tyres were sharing the yard as well.the aec was from memory a mercury and was in ely,s fleet years ago,as always i am open to correction.
BTW,i will be making a nuisance of myself tommorow in your area,i will ring you.
regards graham.

i think? my mate kelvin and i saw this aec in a yard in cardiff a few years back.around 1998-ish,kelvin and i were in ■■■■■■■ at wentloog business park? and directly across the road was a lorry yard and i think this aec? was there.that’s not the old newport road ■■■■■■■ facility,it was the later one down passed tremorfa steel works near rover way.sorry to be so vague
regards andrew.Andrew, I know the area you mean and I have a vague memory of seeing an old lorry in a yard near there about 10-15 years ago, I seem to recall it being visable from the main road on the left hand side if you were heading for Cardiff possibly in a yard with an MOT station.
Neil.
Graham it seems the three of us are talking of the same place, I checked on Googlemaps where I remember seeing it and found the MOT garage to be called Bay MOT, their address is listed on their website as: Old Ely Transport Yard,
Wentloog Avenue,
Rumney,
Cardiff,
CF3 2EX
It all adds up, Neil.

hi all,
1985 south cornelly’s then new roundabout and a fully freighted tarmac mixer driver forgot the road layout had changed .
the aec/leyland? on the roundabout was doing the whinching.
pete 359:
Looks like that Marathon? was missing part of its recovery gear. Thats Glovers from Cardiff’s Leyland Martian taking the strain. I don’t know where that ended up it didn’t make the Glovers-Celtic-Walls transition.
Neil.

hi all,
here’s a few b series operated by p&o roadtanks in village farm pyle,around 1983.
this sleeper cab b series had just loaded at bp baglan.
The Coastal Roadways photos bring back memories Andrew. When I worked for A.E.Evans I used to go in Baglan Bay regularly in the 70s and Coastal,Wincanton and Hemphills were in there all the time. One of the ERFs is under a tank labelled 3Y 2055 which is the UN code for styrene,a product that was made by the thousands of tons a week by BP,a lot of which went to BP Plastics at Barry.
Chris

hi all,
thanks to gah1950 calling today,we have these to share:D .another day at the office, this time moving a partly dismantelled cat 992 loading shovel from south cornelly quarry to the walters group hq at hirwaun.
i took a quick dash through a local back road which brought me onto “the angel inn bridge” over the m4,just as gah1950 approached .that’s a bloody big lump
.

That’s the driver in the shot, Georgie Gould! He said it was the best thing that could have happened to that Super Mastiff, she ended her days in the disused quarry at Cefn Garw Tongwynlais, replaced her with a new Ford Cargo E729 KCX . Little did i know i was to become part of the exclusive rollover mixer club back then.
hi yanto36,
i took this one outside afan tyres when they were next door to us in the 80’s.

Hi Andrew, I remember that truck was owned by Keith Arnold and there was a story behind the truck. When it was delivered brand new to the Collingdon Road offices in Cardiff it had the plate F260KUD and after it had been at work for about 9 months they realised that it had been mixed up with the papers for F265KUD and it had to go to the ministry for a new test and ministry plate!.It operated out of the Cornelly plant which i think was by your workshops or your workshops may even be built on the site of the old plant, then they went down to Llewelyns Quay in Port Talbot when the Plant shut.
Have you seen Billy Burton lately? All the best Ian
