Hello Graham,
I know a bit of that lorries history, It was built for export to France, but because of Adolf
Hitler, remained in a crate until Praills of Hereford assembled it and made the cab and dray body
for Bulmers, when it was sold off it came to Bridgend and worked as a market lorry for
Merthyr Mawr Estates, It finished its days with Bruce Jenkins, who,s yard was at Llandow
at that time, approx 1975/76, as you correctly wrote Barry Cosslet, bought it for restoration
It was partly dismantled and was sold in that condition to John Greatrex (Ely Transport )
John carried out a good restoration on it and it only required sign writing to finish it.

Sadly John died before this was done and I am unable to find out what happened to it,
does any one on this thread know?
cheers Richard

hi richard,
i think? my mate kelvin and i saw this aec in a yard in cardiff a few years back.around 1998-ish,kelvin and i were in ■■■■■■■ at wentloog business park? and directly across the road was a lorry yard and i think this aec? was there.that’s not the old newport road ■■■■■■■ facility,it was the later one down passed tremorfa steel works near rover way.sorry to be so vague
regards andrew.

Hi,Andrew and all.Found these photos of the quarry at Cwmyniscoy,Pontypool when my family owned it in the early sixties. They were very busy at the time building the new town of Cwmbran. Many tonnes left the weighbridge in the quest. There were many small hauliers employed,as well as my families lorries. The quarry was surrounded by houses as the shots will show,it was becoming difficult to blast and extract quality stone.A firm were interested in buying, so Grandad and Dad willingly sold up.With hindsight a good move,as the bulk of stone to continue quarrying lay across the road from the main face.It would have meant buying houses and probably re-routing the road.

Andrew, I know the area you mean and I have a vague memory of seeing an old lorry in a yard near there about 10-15 years ago, I seem to recall it being visable from the main road on the left hand side if you were heading for Cardiff possibly in a yard with an MOT station.

Hi Harry
The Lynx was only built from 1937 until war broke out in 1939, they then built 1500 lorries for the War Department
The photo depicts a standard commercial Lynx approx 1937 the cab and body were built probably by
Alexanders, but could be wrong, the majority of vehicles of this weight 8 ton gross, that was 2ton 10 cwt
unladen and 5ton 10cwt payload, were petrol powered, but Leyland had a Diesel engine available
for the lynx, but this added 3cwt to the unladen weight, and legend had it that Alexanders had a BALSA
wood body that was fitted for the initial taxation weighing, and this brought the lorry to 2ton 10cwt
after the weighbridge filled out the documents, the body was removed until the next diesel chassis
required weighing .
The Lynx that i am restoring is fitted with this particular engine, I also have a W^D petrol engined
which will be next to be restored. hope i have not bored you with all this?
cheers Richard

hiya,
Not the least bit boring, quite the opposite, I can remember one of these running round the Rochdale area well into the 1950s it belonged to a coal roundsman but used to see it occasionally carrying materials for the then thriving cotton industry i think most coal merchants did general haulage and advertised on their motors to that effect last saw it working in about 1954 the year i went into the forces.

Hi Rich,
Some great pictures of your families quarry.I remember similar scenes with RB,s and the same type of conveyer belt and crusher system in the local quarries near where I live. Now it’s all much bigger static and mobile plant.
Cheers Dave.
