took a stroll past the old rom river site in risca today , all traces now gone and a housing estate built there, I not sure but I think they moved further up the valley.Mechanic 77 may know their whereabouts. As a youngster I can remember the lorries in and out of there with the steel wire and mesh. I think BRS did some work and owner drivers others. There was for a number of years an ergo cabbed AEC on site for internal shunting. Sorry took no photos , never got round to it and now wish I had.

Canât say Iâve heard of Rom River before. Where exactly were they and when?
A quick bit of Googling reveals Rom to be still going with eight UK depots, one of which is indeed further up the valley at Pen y Fan ind est, Crumlin.

Hi Neil , to get to rom river was a bit of a nightmare if you wasnt sure where it was. coming from newport on the old A467 you passed the entrance to rogerstone power station (on the left)and continued towards risca , when you came to the welsh oak pub (on the left before railway bridge) you took a right hand turn and followed a road called herbert avenue which climbs upto channel view which levels out and then drops down to a junction which led into rom river. The road off the old A467 was and is still narrow with lots of parked cars and is on a main bus route. If you travel on the train from ebbw vale now and get off at risca the houses the other side of the fence are built on what was rom river. I not sure but think they moved to croespenmaen estate in the late 90âs early 2000âs. I can remember the building being in risca as far back as the 70âs. One of my interests was further down in risca by the foundry called âbroadsâ (now a tesco super store) where clayton & sons scammell crusaders and ergo cabbed aecâs could be found taking drain castings away and the company of alte express who had a nice fleet of ford transcontinentals spent many a hour there watching lorries.
Thanks guys,i remember going in their yard in the early 80âs with my father when he worked out of the Docks in Newport for BRS,which they were loosely associated with.Didnât know they moved up to oakdale though,as ive never seen any of their motors around here for donkeys years.
