Just a question for you Sth Wales lads.Any of you remember a Scunthorpe tanker firm called Barworth, they ran some AEC MK5s out of the coke oven by-products in your area, all crude benzene for Bitmac in Llanwern.I think they only had a couple of 8-leggers in the 60s and I can’t recall what they used later in the 70s and 80s.
Also I remember having to go to a coking plant near Pontypridd with an AEC MK3 for a load of benzole and the short cut was up a nasty little hill called Ton-Teg (I think).Any idea what plant that would have been - this is back around 1970?
Thanks,
Chris.

Sounds like Cwm coke plant, Beddau. It was between Pontypridd and Llantrisant and Tonteg [or power station] hill would have been a way there from the A470, Caerphilly, Nantgarw area. That hill has been reworked and a bypass opened this year.

This link shows the coke plant in its derelict state, may bring back a few memories, especialy the weighbridge in last picture. Neil.

Hi Neil thanks,it was Nantgarw I went to. I used to go into Cwm but via Llantrisant. The other ones were Bedwas and GKN Eastmoors plus SCOW Port Talbot I think,it was a long time ago.Bedwas was the one where there was a flagman at the top of the hill near the weighbridge. It’s hard to believe how derelict Cwm plant is - it was a big place and very busy with tippers in and out all the time.Kendrick,Oscar W Johnson,Longsons,Booths the list goes on and on.I used to take fuel oil in for the boiler house from Wath on Dearne.

If you can’t believe how the coke plant looks you should see where some of the colleries or Ebbw Vale steelworks were, everything gone and re-landscaped or built on.
Neil.

What a state the old coke plants in now, I have run a few loads of duff in there and coke out over the years, I didn’t know it had closed :open_mouth: I have lost touch with it all a bit, I spent a lot of time in South Wales getting coal years ago, can’t be much left in the way of coal down there now. The last one I ran any out of years ago was Tower. I think the workforce had taken that over then, never hear that mentioned now suppose that has shut down as well. Shame it must have put a lot of men out of work. :frowning:

Tower colliery Hirwaun was closed by British coal in 1994 on the basis it was uneconomical to mine the coal there, the miners bought it and reopened in 1995 they remained one of the areas biggest employers until its closure in early 2008when they decided they mined all the coal that they economically could.

Plans have been submitted to remove a further 6 million tonnes of anthracite by open cast mining the site.
Neil.

Well there could be good news coming then if they reopen it, will put some work about. I always liked Tower never got messed about, took your turn got loaded and gone, and a good lot of lads working there.

Cheers

John.

Hi Neil, was Tower the colliery that had a railway crossing at the A465 top side of Glyneath going towards Merthyr?

Yes, you’d see it going along the A465 not long after passing Merthyr Tydfil and before descending the hill to Glyneath.
