gah1950:
hello andrew.
From my time moving the Challengers you tend to get a little knowledge on certain things, which brings me to remember that the engines fitted to the Scammell Commanders are basically the same power plant that is in fact fitted to the Challengers themselves. Could be wrong and open to correction.
Graham.
hi graham,
that would seem logical .i never thought of that .you may have noticed that the south cornelly bypass had only been open a few months in those army pictures,it’s alot more overgrown these days .i have to tell you mate that you walters boys make alot less fuss than the army used too ,the whole porthcawl road was closed off to the public and used soley by them!i could tell when they were approaching as the ground would start to shake inside our building and there was,as you could probably imagine a definate droning sound of around 20 loaded tank transporters at work.
regards andrew

Hiya…hows things andrew■■? i was sitting in one of those commanders one day on Micheal wood i think the driver said they was 720hp. its
a while back so i may be one or two horses out but i know it was alot more than my volvo fm.
Neil (ergo) has fixed me up with some high ratio diffs for my AEC. they ,re off a chap from down your way so i,ll be down in the new year to get them.
John
Hello 3300 John.
i think that the power in the commanders is compareable with the V8 scania 620 but a lot less refined but probably twice the size of the V8.
graham.
Just a note on the Scammell Commander’s, I believe engines were a detuned verion of the Challenger tanks, being a Rolls Royce V12 twin turbo, putting about 625 hp through an Allison autobox. Some prototypes had ■■■■■■■ KTA . I think most of them are with the Jordannian army now.

hi neil,
i had a look in one of my scammell books, you are right mate.the ■■■■■■■ prototype was apparantley better in testing/performance/fuel and just about everything bloody else ,but the british army had to have rollers, how times have changed?the llantrisant assembled oshkosh’s that replaced the scammell’s are caterpillar powered .
regards andrew
hello dai.
i dont think i made that comparison what they were carrying ,thats all i know you could not see or hear anything when they were cracked up.
challengers or chieftains.
graham.
Just a question for you Sth Wales lads.Any of you remember a Scunthorpe tanker firm called Barworth, they ran some AEC MK5s out of the coke oven by-products in your area, all crude benzene for Bitmac in Llanwern.I think they only had a couple of 8-leggers in the 60s and I can’t recall what they used later in the 70s and 80s.
Also I remember having to go to a coking plant near Pontypridd with an AEC MK3 for a load of benzole and the short cut was up a nasty little hill called Ton-Teg (I think).Any idea what plant that would have been - this is back around 1970?
Thanks,
Chris.
I have been informed that the “crapometer” got overloaded so the cut out switch kicked in,but “carryfast” has got it “sussed” and has removed the fuse so when it blows again make sure you arn’t in the vicinity of the effulent tank!!! My wife has another theory----"we are all a bunch of “saddos” for having withdrawl symptons within 24hrs.typical woman I suppose so I got no sympathy from that quarter.Anyway normal service is restored Hip Hip Hooray!!! Is that really you I can hear cheering “H” Cheers Dennis.
