hi all,
trucknet member numbum kindly copied these articles for us at the transport museum in london, they are from a commercial motor during 1957,they feature welsh steel hauliers of that era,who were well known operators in their time, sadly they are all gone, firstly ross garages from penarth road in cardiff, they were a haulier and atki dealer.their former site is now silurian scania.with thanks to numbum, cheers phil  .
regards andrew

Nice article Andrew on Ross Garages! The good old days, but it is clearly at the time of the “Suez crisis” with referring to drivers been laid off.One of my old drivers that I see regular told me that during the Suez job and fuel rationing they used to drag M/T motors back home on the “Bar” to save juice.Dennis.

hi dennis,
thanks for that  .i thought the articles gave us all a good insight of “how it was done”,years ago.this next feature is about entress, hill’s and dennis a firm you had regular contact with during you’r time at brady’s,gwynne bowen.

Once again Andrew well done! these sorts of old articles are what we need on the site, not shots of “Yankee” monstrosoties parked up outside “bespoke” Coachbuilders!!! Cheers Dennis.

Great article about Ross Garages,I remember them well running from their Sheffield depot.

have to agree there

Hi Andrew, that is some heavy reading there supplied by ubym344. Good material though, fairplay.
Did the Ross family start Telford trucks as a Leyland dealership ? Iirc thats how it started out, later going over to Scania, and then changing hands again after WT Davies went out of business.
Perhaps Simon can help out here, although if thats him in the pic at Ryders, he might need to explain the plastic gloves lol.

Regards Paul

Health & saftey Paul  , & you are correct about the history of Telfords, the current owner (Bob Penrose) was a salesman their from the early 70’s i believe & W.T Davies bought it as he had gone for a Leyland franchise but couldn’t do it as their were issues about running a transport firm alongside the dealership apparently, & then Telford Motors came up for sale & he bought that, re-named Telford Trucks.
Then W. T. Davies hit financial difficulty’s mid 90’s the workshop where land Rover is now was closed & W.T’s fleet was serviced at Telfords with some of the fitters being moved up too & Bob Penrose was the dealership manager, he then ended up buying it to keep the franchise around 1997 could of been earlier though.
Please edit if their is any incorrect info lads
Regards Simon.

I thought that after WT Davies went bust an Irish owner bought the Scania dealership and it was named Silurian Scania. I think Bob Penrose was and still is a director there.

As for Ross Garages, if my old grey cells serve me right, I remember them being where the current Saab car sales dealership is.
