Hi all, here are a couple of ken jones transport, newport.
Bernard, when Whitbread first opened Magor, was Sheddicks the primary contractor? I remember some Merc’s running around in the brown livery.
I had a stint with Sheddick’s in the early 90’s I also worked for G.D.J Price who also had a Foden unit that was painted brown, I think that Whitbread may have encouraged hauliers to to go with the brown colour at the time, full kegs out empty ones back. D.H.L have the contract now.
hi all,if i remember right this lorry was painted green with silver stripe to match the heineken trailers
mike68 and bernard thanks for your replies. Its a shame to see local companie’s pushed out and the likes of DHL come in, probably to ruin what once was a nice job with decent rates.
My father contracted to Rhymney Brewery when they were still brewing beer in the 70’s. After Whitbread took over, the brewery was knocked down, and the old company shop was turned into the distribution centre. Everything, kegs, bottles and gas were delivered in for local deliveries.
I remember BRS crusaders with flatbed trailers delivering kegs, and Bulmers of Hereford f88’s with flagons of woodpecker, strongbow and kegs of the infamous scrumpy.
The chinnese six TK ridgids (381) flats were replaced with KM 4 wheelers (466) curtain siders for pub deliveries.
Many jobs were lost when the brewery closed, both internal and external, the late 70’s seeing many more industries close due to recession or consolidation.
Thirty years later it is still happening.
Whitbread also took over a family brewery in Neath/Resolven. Davies and ■■, does anyone remember this brewery?.
Regards Paul

About 15 0r 16 years ago I worked for a company in Grimsby up in North Lincolnshire and he bought a 143 470 4X2 from a Owner Driver from South Wales, what a fantastic bit of kit it was, better than any of the newer 143s I drove. Unfortunatly I only have a couple of poor quality shot of it still in the colours it came in, it was painted fairly soon after he bought it.
I am presuming it belonged to the same fellow that owned this one from a few pages back in the thread.
Just wondered if he was still on the go? Also to see if anybody had any pictures of the 470 when she was newer.

Hiya Andrew, hope your OK and still busy! I’ve meant to ask you this quetion many times but always forget----what was the origin of Joints? did they use/choose the name Joint Motorways long before there was any or at least long before the M4 crossed the “Bridge” Cheers Dennis.

hi dennis,
we are fine thanks and hope you are also, the business started out in the 1930’s and was originally called jones motors, then during the late 1960’s it was decided by the jones family who owned the business to “modernise” the company name and joint motorways was chosen.alan jones who was the boss when i worked there once told me that he didn’t like the name that had been chosen by his father and uncle all those years ago ,as “it didn’t make sense”.
earlier today this threads good friend gah 1950 kindly rang me and has enabled us to share these pictures of another day at work for graham and the walters team, thanks again graham.
regards andrew
