hi andrew
thanks for letting me know about billy i told uncle norman he was sorry to hear the news, well billy is pulling his last load on the hjghway to heaven(rip billy48)
hi john,
no problem mate.he’s in the big trailer park in the sky now r.i.p.for those that are wondering?,sadly one of joint motorways finest “proper” drivers has recently passed away aged 80-ish.seen below on the passengers side of the marathon,i as did my father, knew him all my life and none of us ever knew his true age, sadly that calibre of driver in my opinion is no longer in the uk road transport industry anymore.genuine hard working tough men who could as dennis smith a.k.a. bewick once said “get the job done”.years ago every firm had at least one or more of these drivers.not anymore r.i.p. billy "the cap"hathaway.
regards andrew

Were they called Lewis’? I know the place you mean, You had to drive through a housing estate to get there. theres a car breakers in there now.
thats the blighter… Lecker lewis IIRC…had loads of old stuff in there,
Another that comes to mind is RonTon Haulage, were based in crindau in newport. ran a fleet of mostly erf 6 wheel flats, which were converted artics… often seen a stack off pallets with a truck hidden behind it, and by the morning there wud be no trace of it…

Name doesnt ring a bell… Hendre haulage rings one tho, but not 100% sure, reason i ask is a truck my old man bought brand new , he sold to the said firm years ago, and I’d like to know of its whereabouts ,if it still around that is…was last taxed in 1991 according to dvla, so it may well be scrap, or laid up in a breakers somewhere.

Was the Willowdene garage the one near the old town bridge and rugby ground?
K&J Withey’s place was just down the road from me, sadly now knocked down.

dazcoupe, it was Lecker Lewis in Pontlanfraith they had all kinds of trucks in there. They would strip 2/3 to make one and sell it on. You never new what you were buying, and when it came time for parts forget trying to order via a part number etc, you had to take the part with you to match up. If all else failed go back to Leckers if you could not get the parts, swap the truck lol.
Furbers were from Tir-y-Birth, their yard was next to Charlie Jenkins Datsun dealership. Dougie senior was a fitter for Harold Wakely before buying second hand Adams tippers and contracting for them. They also did a lot of daywork for the NCB early 80’s. Doug had 4 sons who at one time all worked for him, and each one serviced their vehicle with Doug every week. Those Reivers were in good mechanical condition.
Neil, D F Stephens Sr, ran a repair business at their yard before putting tippers on the road.
You are right about D H Davies being closer to town being the Bedford and Vauxhall main dealers. At one time they ran a major parts operation, supplying the likes of Hills of Tredegar, Rhymney Transport Services, Parfitts, Pontlottyn Transport and many other bus and truck concerns with the necessary parts to keep their motors on the road across the heads of the valley.
They did not sell heavy vehicles, most of the bus and coach chassis came from Vincent Greenhous in Hereford or Gwyns garages in Ystrad Mynach.

They made a good body at witheys, we had all ours made there,
