South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

richgriff:
Yes Yanto it did.The body on the lorry as you can see was in perfect condition, even when it was sold.Dad always maintained that a tipper body dented looked awful. The body was not insulated but lined with 5 ply board and stopped the body being abused by a loader dropping stone from a great height. The powers at Llanwern wanted all lorries to be insulated,Dad said Grandad used to run up to the airfields in Oxfordshire during the war at 30 mph loaded with tarmac, from The Forest of Dean.So why not have good wood insulation on the inside of a body, all tippers had wooden bodies, steel and aluminium were needed for the war effort,it worked then so why not now??We never had a load returned due to tarmac being too cold.!! If you look on my previous post when lorry had the body fitted at Praills,Hereford it still looks as good.

Believe it or not richgriff i actually bought the very body off morris chappells lorry when it had been scrapped and bought by a scrap dealer in Tredegar called Nigel down in Ashvale. The cab was rotten on the sed atki of your dads and i was an owner driver for tarmac topmix in 1990 went down to Jeff Ways to look for a new cab to go on the sed atki but couldn’t find one so ended up buying a 1977 ERF (REH 180R) with a 290 Rolls Royce engine which was ex cement tanker, to supply the concrete plant at Trefil where i ran out of. The body was still immaculate then as Morris had her on sand (i think out of Dallimores wharf in Newport?) and she fitted straight onto the ERF tipping gear and all!.I can remember the praills of Hereford badge on the back of the tailgate now you said.
Morris Chappell was a hell of a character and i can remember him just before he scrapped your dads sed atki with a rubber squegee on the inside of the cab aswell as the wipers going cos the roof had gone on the seam and there was as much water running down the inside of the screen when it rained as outside!!!.

Glad to hear you made good use of the body Yanto 36.Morris must have really liked the old girl with such dedicated use of a squeegee  Have posted this before, but hear she is with new body fitted.Probably the only other tipper bodies that wore really well were made by Duramin,Lydney.

This ex Pioneer has mixed it’s last load.Hope the driver of tis one is not still booking waiting time!!

Never knew Robert M Bailey plant started off in Newtown Llantwit before Bedwas until i found his Ford D series at Jeff Ways

Ex Hills Erf cab and a Scammell Routeman

These cabs are not too bad as they have been stored inside

Sorry Lads, this is the best angle i could get of this A reg Constructor 8 wheel tipper, body was in good condition cab could be brought back with some TLC!

Bedford TL with a dropside tipper body which has never ever been loaded!

ERF which finished it’s days as a shunter could be brought back to life

hi all,
here’s mechanic 77’s mighty 142 at work pulling for griggs.

also here are a few of his scania 143, centurion number 14.

Evening all… signed up on here after browsing for a few pictures ,and seen a few names i recongnised in with the pics that peeps have posted…

My late dad ran tippers in newport for around 25 years and i drove for him from around 1992 to 1996 and then sold what we had left when he passed away in 1999…

The truck i used to drive( A211 WOB) was bought brand new in 1984 By Morris chappell, which he ran out of south wales sand in newport, we bought it from him in 1992~ and it worked up till 1997 when its chassis snapped whilst tipping on a building site…

The Sed aki mentioned in the above posts, from memory Keith brimble ran it out of llanwern slag also, wether that was before or after Morris chappell owned it , i cant remember,

However i can remember that both Keith Brimble and his son Chris then bought Brand new fodens 8 leggers, and they got caught pilfering fuel from Llanwern slag and were thrown out of there.

Anyhow enuff of my waffling ,heres a few pics of the 2 trucks myself and my dad were running in 1992-1999…

Pictured at south wales sand in newport.

And at one of my dads at 2nd severn crossing when they were building it,

Will see if i can dig anymore pics up…

daz.
