Hi all, Andrew great photos as usual.
Neil, do you know if Brian Kellow commercials are still in business, they were the Steyr dealer in Bristol. They also had a workshop in Avonmouth at Dawson Rentals yard.
richgriff, did the 6 wheel Foden belong to an owner driver who worked out of Steetleys in Taffs Wells originally.

My Dodge in her old NCB livery days pictured with the driver Ray on the side of valley facing Pantyrawel and Lewistown

Hi Andrew, no the marathon is still there as i went over on way home from work and took them this evening, mickey mouse cab is in good nick being fibreglass, it has survived the tree sap as has a scammell routeman cab!.Not sure who owned the foden because of all the moss on the cab but will try to ring Jeff to find out. Do you fancy having a crack at restoring the Marathon then?

richgriff:
Here are a few from Llanwern Slag approx 1986.All gone now.Early morning in Llanwern.Sun just coming up waiting to load tarmac. My first lorry a Foden Haulmaster had a V8 ■■■■■■■ totally unreliable.Converted to ■■■■■■■ 14l 250 she didnt hang around!!Gordon Dorrington behind with new unit ERF E14 bought from Frank Tucker in Exeter.Replaced his C series daycab 8lxb. ![](http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac93/richgriff1/006.jpg)Austin with The Gipsy Queen in Llanwern, sheeted with tarmac. At the time second lorry run by Jimmy Nash. ![](http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac93/richgriff1/005.jpg)Jimmy Nash just loaded and sheeted, original weighbridge in background with Volvo F7 weighing out.If axle weights were not right a quick sprint off weighbridge and application of brakes soon made load shift.More like a landing strip. ![](http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac93/richgriff1/004.jpg)Jimmys Foden with pile of freshly crushed slag behind. The smell is something you cannot describe.Personally I loved it, like bitumen out of a tarmac plant.Sure a lot of tipper boys know what i mean!
Malcolm Price with my Dads SA 400 in Llanwern. ![](http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac93/richgriff1/002.jpg)Jimmy Nash and Gilbert Hughes in Llanwern.Have some more photos of Gilberts volvo tipping on Barber Green. Will post later.Fresh lime from Derbyshire being offloaded behind. ![](http://i889.photobucket.com/albums/ac93/richgriff1/001.jpg)Line up of old 80s lorries outside Heckett`s building in Llanwern.Waiting for loads to come out of weighbridge.

Hi Richgriff, did the SA400 of your Dad’s end up with Morris Chappell working out of Newport sand wharf?

Yes Yanto it did.The body on the lorry as you can see was in perfect condition, even when it was sold.Dad always maintained that a tipper body dented looked awful. The body was not insulated but lined with 5 ply board and stopped the body being abused by a loader dropping stone from a great height. The powers at Llanwern wanted all lorries to be insulated,Dad said Grandad used to run up to the airfields in Oxfordshire during the war at 30 mph loaded with tarmac, from The Forest of Dean.So why not have good wood insulation on the inside of a body, all tippers had wooden bodies, steel and aluminium were needed for the war effort,it worked then so why not now??We never had a load returned due to tarmac being too cold.!! If you look on my previous post when lorry had the body fitted at Praills,Hereford it still looks as good.

My guess it was new to Rugby Cement. Then probably showmen judging by the lining out. Could be a project once all that tree sap is of it?

hi all,
here’s an old scammell routeman, many a tipper operator ran these, courtesy of mechanic 77

This looks as if it belonged to D F Stephens of Tredegar. It was either on daywork with the NCB or at the docks in Newport with A J Williams of Merthyr.
Dai sr had 2 sons Dai and Carl who wer driving Daf 2300 8 wheelers early 80’s same livery. Previously they ran orange Deutz’s.
Anyone know what they are up to these days.

hi paul,
good morning from rainy porthcawl mate  .on the back of this photo is written tredegar,so i would say you are as usual, bang on.paul, america must be empty  .they are all in south wales, apparantley there’s a few people playing golf here at the moment, not that it has been mentioned…much        .

The Stephens Routeman photo was taken at what I remember to be their yard/garage next to the now by-passed road that brought you into Tredegar from Blackwood just after you crossed over the valley, there was a Vauxhall dealer [DH Davies] further up the road.

The Stephens garage was later used by a truck repairs place called Glyn garage but I am not sure if they are still there. I don’t know if Stephens moved elsewere but I believe they’ve now finished. Cottons also from Tredegar eventually moved out from their yard behind the main street shops and I still see a Scania 4 series topline in their colours working.
Neil.

hi all,
well done neil mate.here’s a few more of your pictures  .i think? that this daf was probably the last new truck i remember l.c.lewis having, not sure what became of that firm?

a couple of l.c.lewis’ earlier heavy haulers.a scammell and 4000 series foden.
http://i906.photobucket.com/albums/ac267/pete359_bucket/lcl2.jpg[/img]]

LC Lewis also ran a FH12,FH16 AND FL10 on L registrations after the Daf. I have a book about the firm published in 1996 at which time it states they had the Volvo’s, the Foden above and a Ford Transcontinental for shunting. Last I remember Viridor were in his old yard with bulk waste trucks.

Asked Andrew Way and he did not know who owned it first but you’re right it was a showmans vehicle last going off.Anybody who is thinking of saving her should hurry up because she is due to get lamped next week as i was over there on Friday and jeff is edging ever closer to her!
