Nice line up there Andrew. Spent 3 years in Merthyr Tech mid 70s. That car park was great in the snow, practising rally skills.

this is a picture of smiths enterprises scania in 1970 when she was new

Hi John, you may remember Smiths putting 2 new CAT loading shovels into Newport docks early 80s. I can not remember the model but they could load 20 tonne in one go. Cracking machines they were.
A blending shed had been set up and the dockers were running it, they had been trained on the CATs and let loose. Danny Eagan of Pontypridd had put a bunch of old 8 wheelers on the job. By the end of the first day half had been put out of service, the body’s all torn up by the great British dockworker.
If they had reality shows back then, these guys would be stars. I dont think anyone could act so useless, lol.

hi phil,
thanks for sharing more gems with us yet again mate.good to meet you last sunday at merthyr    .

Saw the pics of the cat 992.We have a cat 922 traxcavator,a baby brother. It was bought new to work in a quarry father had outside Trellech.Due to the fact he was maintaining and driving at the time she went on contract to Monmouthshire county council,as well as doing some work alongside the haulage.Winter was usually when she was in her element, clearing snow. There are some of her blowing snow between Monmouth and St.Arvans ,by Chepstow. They have not been found yet.She would be so on top of the job that if you pushed the blower hard the cat would stall the blowers engine.Sorry about the quality of photos. I went back around the yard tonight a took some of the old girl in the evening sun.She could still do a days work.

Down a lane somewhere in trellech area.
On top of the keepers above Blaenavon.
Ditto.

Hi rich,
Good to see those pics of the loading shovel in the snow. The council used to hire the loading shovels from the quarries this way if it was really bad,not with a blower like yours, just pushing the snow. The shovels are to big nowadays for that, also the council have plenty of their own kit, just haven’t got enough of blokes left on there to drive it.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave.
There is mesh on the windscreen but it does not show up on the photo. You can see the top and bottom bars that it is fixed to.

Cheers Phil.

My apologies Phil, just had a closer look,it is on there as you say.Must get me glasses cleaned  .
Cheers Dave.

We had a brand new council blower in the yard for approx 5 years.Deutz engine with twin adjustable shoots. We put her on the cat once in all that time.It was sent back and probably scrapped. The council have lorries just for gritting with blades on the front. They should be demountable and in service all year.An independant haulier would have gone bust following the councils policy of waste.

Cheers Andrew,We had a Dennis dust cart pull in to pick up our rubbish. It had a ■■■■■■■ engine and had an automatic gearbox fitted twelve months previous. It was on its second engine as a result. The engine and automatic box had to be mounted further up the chassis. The idiots failed to realise the pto shaft to drive pump for the compactor also needed to be shortened!!!!Engine expired prematurely.Dont want to bore you all night.Quote unquote.Ha Ha.
