South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Thank Dave.Just posted a couple of Oldies on Tippers site.Have got some old delivery notes from Bulmers, delivering pear and apples. They used to haul a lot of materials from Hereford Washed Sand and Gravel at Stretton Sugwas,Five Lanes Quarries,Magor and many others. They used to own Cwmynyscoy Quarry,Pontypool when Cwmbran was being built.Have a few 60s quarry shots to post.Have got duplicate invoice books going back to the 1940`s.Interesting reading when speed limits were different and most of the loads were handballed on.They just got on a did it.

I remember the hauliers out of Stretton Sugwas in the 60’s and up until it closed, there was a chap called Jackson from Ross on Wye who had a Dodge Kew in Sugwas for years.I’m not familiar with the other quarries you mention rich, only one I know is the one near Caldicot.
Cheers Dave.

NZ JAMIE:
G’day Andy mate,
I was going through my Kenworth pics and I found this one taken at Truckfest South West 1990. I’m pretty sur it’s a T600,a bit unusual being a single screw.

What sort of work did it do,do you know mate?

I believe Chase commercials are still going having evolved into Georgia trucks [ connects to name on the KW’s bonnet]

Anorak time… if you look above the silver Steyr cab to the right of the Kenworth in first picture you can see the black light bar flyer of a tow truck behind it, this I’m guessing would be Wall’s Freightliner which was supplied as a tractor unit by Chase commercials.

Hey mate,
Nothing wrong with the odd truck anorack moment. Is this the Freightliner your talking about?

Jamie,
it is indeed the truck I was talking about, Black beauty [now White lightning].
Neil.

Some more of Eric Wards fleet.Three 240`s in the middle, with Rollers keeping them in line.Parked outside Troy station now gone.Cable drum on Six Wheeler.
Great shot of ERF in autumn sun on Wonastow Road in Monmouth,

Brand new Foden with CF trailer with coil well.
Number 11 Foden out of 15 they ran.
Rob told me the Atki was good for 70 mph +.
Foden line up with Troy station behind.Yes Bazz my family were E&O Griffiths and my Dad D.R.Griffiths.We only ran tippers or flats. Will post some more on Borders thread. Can say Andrew that Wards ran an immaculate fleet of lorries, always on steel out of Llanwern mainly. The quality of the original photos is superb.

hi do you know reg number of scammell i think it used to be smiths enterprises truck

Well done lads for making such an effort at the Merthyr show. As we don’t get the Commercials out in South Wales these days, its great to see such a selection locally. I went to see the Bournemouth to Bath Road Run yesterday, and I cannot say how pleased I was to see the massive effort put on by Shaun Swain from Pencader who took his Leyland Octopus & dangler, plus the Leyland Beaver, plus his Volvo recovery truck, from Pencader to Bournemouth and back just so we can see them in action. Thats a lot of diesel, and a lot of driving, especially taking the dog & pup up from Carmarthen to Pencader in the dark. Well done to all of you.

this is a picture of smiths enterprises scania in 1970 when she was new
