hi komatsu thanks for responding ,has i said yesterday i didnt realise steetley had sites in south wales i know they were quite big in northern and central england but that was it.the more im finding out the more im realising they were a big company ,by the way excuse my lack of knowledge but isnt taffs well near cardiff  thanks again drewster

Hi Drewster
the quarry is right by junction 32 on the M4 and you could always see the conveyor belt sticking out ontop of the hill but it has now been taken down ready to develop that part of the quarry. There was a lot of lorries running to port talbot steel works many years ago but will try and get some photos for you

Is it still there? I will add it to the Caitlin House Register.

Hi Malcom the scania is is still there and is parked outside there every day

hello drewster.
i notice that you have mentioned steetly of taffs well, when i was a kid a few years ago now i had two uncles that drove for them.in those far off times steetley operated a large fleet of leyland octopuses.by day the job was to run three loads of dolomite from taffs well to the abbey works, by night they had a changeover at or near longbridge in birmingham at a cafe called smoky joes on bristol road south, they would run up empty most of the time but nearly always had a dangler (four wheeled trailer) behind.the fully freighted trucks would come down from either sheffield or their main headquarters at shireoaks( notts) with refractory bricks which were also used at the abbey or the newly commissioned spencer works at llanwern.i had the pleasure many times to go on these jollies but one major drawback was to meet their workers conveiance lorry which used to pick up all the quarry workers up at 0630 at the bottom of pentyrch hill just adjacent to the footbridge from taffs well it was a very old four wheeler seddon with a ladder hanging from the tailboard which when on board there was a steel shelter to save the workers from the weather.there was a chap in charge of the transport and his name was Walter Keys who lived in gwaelod y garth there is not a lot more i can think of at the moment but i hope it has given a little insight to steetleys early activities in south wales.
kindest regards graham.

This was a Renault i had brand new when i was driving for Valley Haulage from Cornelly . I took the photo whist waiting to load coal from Onllwyn washery to take to nottingham and it took 4and a half hours but that was normal for that place as many will know who,ve loaded there

Took this pic on the way back from Thompsons after having a new body fitted . I was sent to have if fitted on the way back from a blockstone job in chichester and they lifted the old body on top and welded a few straps on for me to get it home

The scania in this photo was new to BRS Bridgend, then Dave Holland and then Jamie Hazell and of coarse kenfig salvage

hello dave.
sorry for the delay in replying to you, been up country shifting heavy metal around.the story surrounding the climb up to baverstocks is i picked a cat 385 lme up from bayston hill to be returned to our yard for repairs.out of curiosity i flicked the info cursor for the fuel consumption and not surprisingly it showed 0.5 miles to the gallon, one of my sharp eyed friends informed me that i had an ABS fault which i did but a two amp fuse decided to give in.i will be in your area shortly again and will give you a shout.
regards graham.

Hi Graham,
Still pretty impressive figures for a pull like that, looking at your speed and the temperature gauge etc. It’s a hard old punch up over there, you need those 620 horses all pulling together with that weight. I would imagine the V8 sound would be very good to the ears listening to it coming up the hill.
Cheers Dave.

hello dave.
the problem with the adblue emmisions system is that it is not practical to fit emminox exhaust stacks to hear the full tune of the V8,an operator here in south wales had an emminox set up but with disasterous problems something to do with pressure in system causing the engine to slip into limp mode.in the end silurian scania removed the whole lot and reverted it to a normal setup .i must agree there is no better sound than a V8 under stress and i suppose a ■■■■■■■ would be a close contender, someone told me last week that it is now possible to fit these through systems on the V8s but i must say i dont know if that is the case.
regards graham.

hiya,
Must be fantastic having that sort of power for moving those weights but that sort of stuff was moved years ago with nothing more than little Gardner engines all sorts of hard work equiptment double reduction thingy’s where you had to stop to engage it with super low gearing that got you anywhere the modern stuff would go but have to admit very slowly, would’nt have minded being on the heavy side in my later years just to have used the new stuff for comparison, some cracking motors around in this day and age.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Graham,
This one of Mark Preedy’s from Hereford sounds pretty awesome, you will possibly see him loading in the Gore sometime.
Cheers Dave.

Thanks for the reply, I wonder if its one of Capper’s wagons from Talbot Green? reg is familiar.

thanks komatsu and graham for responding ,finding interesting things out about the company everyday on trucknet and from a few older drivers where i work who used to either work for them or know people who did.one thing that does baffle me is i know they used to run dolimite down to the steel works from thrislington and whitewell ,so why would they do that if they had a quarry down there on the doorstep  theres probably a simple reason behind it that i havent thought about.looking forward to seeing those pics komatsu thanks again drewster.
