back in 2000 when coney beach owner pat evans bought a ride from surrey based mannings, this volvo came as part of the deal.she’s still parked around the back of coney beach, rotting away.

Does anyone know if this could be bought? The old man has always fancied a Volvo N10 or 12.
Hi John,
and welcome to our site. We look forward to seeing your photos. This site goes beyond South Wales, as I am replying from Florida, so its really hard for me to supply photos, so I ask lots of Questions!
First of all what does Tony think of these 4 wheel drive rally cars?
Back in the late 80s you ran a big Scania, and I remember talking with one of your drivers who said they were troublesome, bad tourqe converters I think. What do you think was the best motor you ran.
Cheers Paul.
Im Tony Morgans son John. You have all certainly put a smile on his face with pics of his old trucks. It has also put a few lumps in my throat.
We have hundreds of pictures of the various things that were moved over the years & I will try to post them if you think they would be of intrest.
To answer one of the questions asked earlier - We did have a Scammell Crusader & she had a 72 series Detroit in her. The Sound was fantastic. It was Driven Danny Harren who also used to work for Dai Coity.
Heres a poic of the S26 - She was a big cam ■■■■■■■ with a Brochuis Torque Convertor & Spicer box. The cab was extended by Loco Motors of andover. I will try to find the pics of the inside. The last I saw of her she was with Leiceter Heavy Haulage. The Trailer is a Tasker 4 axle with 2 self trackers. The dolly was removed from the front for this load.
Big Doug Randall can be seen climing in the cab with Ken Harry his mate with his back to us. Bothy are now sadly no longer with us. The guy on top was known as Hedghog (Gareth Lewis)
The boat was the last Bristol Channel Cutter called the Olga on her way to Swansea Maritime Museum from Maldon in Essex.

Hi Paul - Thanks for the Welcome. The old man asked if you used to work for Raymonds?
4x4 Rally cars - I think once you have driven a good one you dont want anything else. He has just bought an ex David llewlyn Corsa to have some fun with. I have Rallied 4x4 cars for 12 years now and its certainly a Culture shock. Hopefully he will be out before the end of the year. For an old giffer he is still fast.
The Scania is pictured below. It was a complete disaster from the begining. It always pulled to the left - Huge tyre wear - The amount of bits that broke in the Tourque converter and diffs was incredable. It was the second from worst truck I think we ever had & cost £97 thousand in 1988. The worst truck was a Ford D1000 I have been told.
I loved the American Trucks - Would love to find the Mack or the Kenworth & Restore them.
The most hard working truck I would say was the Old Volvo F12 pictured earlier. It was amazing and I often ask why he didnt buy more. He loved Scanias and all the ones before the last 143 were fantastic. The 6x4 Marathon was also Fantastic. One of my biggest mistakes was selling it to Mark Thompson who promised me he was going to restore it but sold it on straight away. I have tried many times to buy her back.
The Mack & the Leyland Below were pictured Just after being painted - The Scania is moving a Dutch Barge in Cardiff Bay with a Nicholas trailer. Driven by Tony Phillips with Ken Harry as a mate again.

this is Graham leaving Ogmore Vale with a 65 ton carcrusher on taking it to Bayliss,s new yard at Bridgend
Graham after he dropped the crusher off and yes it was a bit tight getting out

there is one particular large yard on village farm industrial estate in pyle.many years ago it was home to argosy transport which was owned by one of john raymond’s brothers, for many years after that it was home to p&o roadtanks, during the 1980’s these dafs were pictured there.it’s now an empty yard.
Hi, just seen these pictures, does anybody know if my old mate Gary Fergison drove any of these Dafs ?,I know that he used to drive a “new” 95 at one time.
regards Andrew.
Hi John and Tony,
no I am not the Paul John who Andrew informd us a few pages back is now a director at JR Transport. I did speak to said person many years ago, but after many attempts trying to identify myself he hung up on me thinking one of the drivers was taking the pi–. Could I speak to Paul John please, hi my name is Paul John and I would like to discuss, hang up! Lets try this again, same result, in the end I had my wife call it was easier.
I am a valley boy, from Rhymney heads of the valley, but lived in Cardiff my wifes home town before emmigrating to the States 18 yrs ago.
As a teenager I followed your dad, and Jeff Church when rallying was in my opinon at its best. As sweet as our favourite diesel may sound, there is no better than a twin cam with 40s on at full revs, having the upmost respect for the drivers behind the wheel, and the mechanics who kept them running.
Its good to know that you are rallying, I must admit it is something that I miss, even the stage at LLandow circuit.
So far one of my favourite photos, was one of Andrews with a scraper box belonging to Locks of Pencoed.
Do you or Tony remember a guy from Pontypool/Newport who ran transcons on low loader work, I think most of his work was for Short bros?
The Bison in the photo, fitted with a K+ J Withey body probably had a 500 fixed head motor which went like sh-- off a shovel, but needed a parachute to stop, as the brakes were not the best.
When it comes to American trucks, these days it has to be Volvo, but in their day Mack trucks dominated the construction and heavy haul market.
Cheers Paul
Paul John, the guy you mentioned from Newport/Pontypool who ran Transcons on low loader work would have been LC Lewis. They also later ran Fodens, a Scammell S26 and an 8x4 Daf.

Hi Paul.
I speak to Jeff Churchill a few times a week. He still keeps a keen intrest in Rallying and one of his main mechanics was Mike Bird who is Chris Birds father - Chris has a lovely modern fleet that has been pictured on this thread.
Im sure the guy in Newport was Lew Lewis ( LC Lewis). I remember him as being a really nice bloke.
Pictures below is one of his old Fodens that we ran for a while. Very good 150 tonner its only problems was the tyre wear from the 1200x24 tyres - 45MPH and I think it was on rare GKN axles that were difficult to get parts for. Pictured below with a Stokey CAT 245 Nicholas 5 axle on their way to Devon. Barry Jones & Ken Harry again would have been with it.

The old mans Chevette @ Llandow.

According to Terry Morgan - Tony`s brother
The truck pictures was driven by “SPEEDY” Brian Leyshon - Gary Ferguson drove a 2800 A459PHK - A458PHK was driven by Mervyn James. Gary also drove one of the 95`s as you mention.
Is anyone out there looking for storage for a Truck or Bus project? Bridgend area or east of Cardiff. One at £50 per month, and several at £60 per month. Get in touch !

Thanks Neil, LC Lewis, that sounds right, and as John mentioned he was a nice bloke. Last time I saw him, he rented a couple of units off me at Gullivers to pull flatbed trailers backing up his own motors for a few days.
John, great shot at llandow, a mk2 ■■■■■■ in the background also. If we stray off the topic, I will take the stick, it will be well worth it lol.

hi all,
it’s good to see that our thread continued so well whilst i was away.everyone who has been to malta in the past tells me that these days all the real old trucks have gone,i had never been before so had nothing to compare this trip with.on our travels around the island we found many gems that would have long since been retired from front line uk work.one of the first yards that we called into was salv. bezzina,i reckon? that this contractor has a welsh connection.the owner of the business kindly let all 11 of us roam around his graveyard of trucks that were parked there,he told me that he bought this scammell from the uk in 1980 and when he picked it up it was red.the first name that sprang to my mind was “wynns”,they ran many of these contractors and this one could? have been one of theirs.

my friend Paul a mechanic with South Wales Fire Service, popped in to show me their Diamond T BREAKDOWN
he was taking it to the neath area for storage, they dont use it very often these days

This restored tank transporter, has had its Hercules diesel removed and is fitted with a Two Stroke
detroit engine, It makes all the right noises
