South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

morgan’s of cwm have been trading many years, using mainly british built trucks (until recently) when foden finished manufacturing.   here’s a roadtrain.

hi dave,
i have not been to cwm for many years,i know that alot of morgan’s work was with b.s.c. (as was) in ebbw vale, all of that former steel mill has long since been demolished,i have some pictures of foden alpha’s in morgan’s colours and i hope they have survived.a mate of mine bought a turbo leyland beaver that they had owned since new, that was the last time i went to their yard, around september 2004.
regards andrew

here is another from morgans of cwm,an l registered ec erf.

Question Andrew is that tag axle on the ERF a factory job or is it an after thought and it was origionally a 4x2? Dennis.

hi dennis,
how are you mate?i dare say that you noticed as i did the hub centre on the rear lift.would that be a granning conversion?
regards andrew

Hi Andrew
Morgans did a conversion back in the early 70s, they converted an albion riever into an artic pulling a double axle trailer at 24 tons gross, what a match ! regards tony

hi tony,
well done for registering and posting, that’s what this thread needs more of.this is a reiver once owned by morgan’s of cwm.don’t know if it’s the one you refer too?
regards andrew

this is in my opinion a real rare beast.a leyland beaver turbo,i don’t know how many were made or sold, all i know is that this one was bought new by morgan’s and ran out of ebbw vale on the steel, during my days with joint motorways visiting ebbw vale steel works fairly regularly i used to see this motor shunting for morgan’s.many years before that i recall many south wales drivers talking about this flying machine with “baited breath” when she was new.my mate neil james from stourbridge bought it to restore from morgan’s back in september 2004.i met neil there that day and took many photos of the remains of this motor,if only i could find the bloody things.   .

Hiya Andrew I’m OK hope you are too! It’s the other B*****s you have to worry about! Yea I thought that axle looked a bit suspicious and you are right it is probably a Granning they were used quite exstensivley on Scanias after the 38 ton came in.But I never fancied blacksmith jobs my-self on either tractors or trailers!! Regards Dennis.

hi dennis,
totally agree with you sir,i prefer manufacturers axles and their in house design and engineering expertise,as opposed to a “ba.tar.ised abortion” conversion job.you have only got to look back at the earlier pages on this thread and look at some of joint motorways’ trailers to see why i think that.

intake transport started out in sheffield, then moved to scunthorpe.they have many outbased drivers, during 2006/7 one of their welsh based drivers was my mate philip evans a.k.a. stan,he and i first met in the early 70’s in the cab of his father’s j&m transport f88.when he drove for intake he started with this daf after several months he had a new fh13.the daf is seen here outside my bodyshop and loaded with re-bar from celsa at cardiff for glenngarnock in scotland.

this old merc. is owned and has been since new by winston morris, one of the few long standing owner drivers still working out of south cornelly quarry.i took this particular photo 3 years ago, don’t know if he is still running her?

this t.d.williams daf and trailer were new when i took this photo.

Hiya Pete359…I don’nt know if you remember James c Ashworth Bradford. The same paint job as Morgans.
Dennis might recall them. Well he was old school and anything and everything was there to be modified.
He made his own trailers two welded together but i don’t think he had many break on him as he would put
more gussets than enough on his work…He was renowned for massive cow bars on the front of his motors
and words say if a lorry was going slow up hill they would push eachother.Obviosley this was before the law
started to squeeze us to tight(1970s). Ashworth had a massive contract with International tractors in Doncaster.
but if you can recall disaster struck when international lost the pension money on a combine harvester flop,
and international sold out to case i think this was the ending for Ashworths. They do have a couple of trucks
in preservaion IICR a Maudsley and a AEC both 6 wheelers.

back in feb. 2007 bob beech from trucking magazine and photographer alaistair cuszick did a feature on the two trucks owned and operated by my good friend jason williams.i took this photo that day on kenfig nature reserve, which is sadly better known now for “dogging” than brilliant truck photos.one of alaistair’s photos taken at this location that day is still being used now in every issue of trucking to promote the magazines annual subscriptions.

an old welsh registered borderer, lying in the corner of a yard.

pyle based j. mcarthy plant hire and civil engineering, have now replaced this actros with a newer model.

five years ago today, trucknet member scooter1 sold me my f16,after nearly a year restoring it i went all over the uk and ireland attending many show and rallies.i used to get strange looks and odd comments on the cb when i used to pass other trucks going uphill and down dale while “fully freighted” with coil, only the three coils on my trailer were actually empty timber cable drums used in the construction of the millenium stadium back in 1999 and given to me by my mate kelvin powell.  .
