hi all,
back in 1985,john raymond’s produced this glossy brochure to promote the company and gain new contracts, these days a web site would serve this purpose.this brochure has some now older images that i hope trucknet members enjoy.the first image is the brochure’s cover,a then new f10 driven by long serving driver ■■■■ hopkins (r.i.p.) with a j.r. tilt coming around john raymond’s roundabout, showing the then fleet and new garage (opened in 1984) in the background.all of this in view is now gone and raymond’s have moved only half a mile away.the new development on the site of j.r’s former yard is a very impressive/expensive looking building housing office space and since the economy fell out of bed at the same time as the completion of it’s constuction,it remains empty.with regard to the sale of the property, j.r. couldn’t have timed it any better.
happy easter andrew

Hi Andrew and all, happy Easter to you. Perhaps they should of taken an extra shot here, as TD Williams’s roadtrain is in view. The competition in your brochure !. Back in1989/90 JRT were looking for subbie’s for international work. I gave them a call and spoke to a guy with either the same name as me or John Paul. Anyway the guy was wound a bit tight as he must of thought I was taking the P-ss, and hung up on me.
The trucks all parked up at the front was an impressive sight.
Cheers Paul

Great old motors just the job for dragging extinct mainline loco’s from Lancs down to Barry loco graveyard would have pulled two and still had some to spare, but you did need the power it was a canny old hill into there.

hi Johnnie, actually this model was rated for 110 - 150 tons and known as “lightweight contractors”!!! the 240 ton contractors and the 250 ton mk2’s had the larger coachbuilt cabs and larger wheels.they were rated very conservatively by Scammell and could quite easily handle twice that weight. WYNNS used them for twenty years because nothing else came close for capability and reliability. thats quite a recomendation in anyones book! cheers Mark

Hi all happy easter to every one. I was just asking what does iron lung mean ? I know i’m from Shropshire but I here from the saying a lot on theses forums and i don’t know what it means. Tony
well done with the John Raymond photos Andrew! takes me back to when i was a kid and i would go down the yard with either my brothers or my dad,my oldest brothers still there after 25 years, woulda done less for murder! i lasted 4 years there and i would go back tommorow if the old boys were still there, but the place went downhill a bit before i left, and a lot of good boys left there.
keep them coming mate!
HI Andrew, its funny how certain things stick in your mind. Mr John must of thought one of the drivers was playing games with him! Anyway I went over on a Sunday morning and spoke to a couple of the boys getting ready to head out that PM. My wife called the next day and we rec’d info on the rates etc, but they were not that good to be honest, so we never followed through.
Cheers Paul c

pete 359 your photo of the old 8 wheel scammell, i dont know who p+p transport of bridgend were but i can offer a few details on the wagon.
although looking very old these 8 wheelers did not go into production until april 1937.
they were quite different to other 8 wheelers on the scene at the time. most of this model had coil suspension on the front axles
and the axles were of tubular construction. with welded on stub axles.
they had 7 litre 4 cylinder petrol engines (82 bhp) or the gardner 6lw (112bhp) at that time. they had scammells own designed 6 speed gearbox
and 95% of them had single drive, scammells axles only provided single drive ,the rear bogie in most cases had a form of rubber under compression
suspension. with leaf springs available as a option but the scammell rubber suspension proved to be very robust and durable and vast the
majority had this fitted sorry to drag it out but it might be of interest to some members, regards richard

john evans of llanelli were a fairly large concern, based on the side of the main road between llanelli and pembrey.they disapeared during the early-mid 90’s?prior to that they had a large fleet with many outbased drivers.the yard/buildings that they operated out of are still there.
aberthaw cement foden passing what to me looks like “the blue anchor inn”,the oldest pub in wales.

hI Andrew,
There used to be several drivers from the Hay On Wye area drove for John Evans for a long time, some until he finished, they kept the lorries at Hay or where they lived.
Cheers Dave.
