this firm were? as i remember from pontypool/blackwood? area.my mate mechanic77 will tell you.they ran several transcon’s and others.someone once told me they later became monex transport, who are also no longer with us.
I remember them being based on the Polo grounds estate near Pontypool, wasn’t aware of a Monex connection though. [saw a Monex artic in Mitchel Troy services on way to show saturday]
I think it was Tony Dumelow who had the red Transcon from Merthyr, he was from the Rogerstone/Risca area as you said but haven’t seen or heard of the truck being around for years. He was a big Transconti fan and had a large display of them in model form too I recall.
I remember this transcon, plus a few others and some Scania’s. Iirc Andrew was running a couple over the water late 80’s. The red was metallic, he had a 4x2 transcon for sale, I wanted to swap my RS 2000 for it but he wanted cash. By the time I had advertised the car and sold it for about a grand more than the tractor was worth, I called Andrew to be told it was sold. Sometimes when you need a truck quick, which you can put on the road the next day you loose sense of the value of such precious items.
Some neighbours of mechanic77, HH Williams, sons offered me good money for the RS but when they told me they were going to rally it, I had to walk away, it was just to good and was a collecters motor. This was my first sign of becoming an old ■■■■, as it happens the car went to a good home in Chepstow.
Wasn’t the ministry test centre on Polo Grounds ind este. Memory is fading now, time for a nap.

merthyr tydfil based j&s transport were usually on the coal with this transcontinental.seen here at crick truckstop subbing to john raymond.there’s a steel coil behind the well sheeted load near the headboard.last i saw of this truck was at gaydon several years ago when it was owned by tony bromilow from rogerstone near newport.
hiya,
Tidily sheeted Pete359, but not well sheeted the sheet should continue over the head board to ensure absolute dryness of the cargo, now you can call me a nit picking old goat or anything you like, but i was a perfectionist.
thanks harry long retired.

hi Paul. the ministry test centre was and still is on the polo grounds est. did my class1 there in 1984. was over there last year tipping stone next door for tarmac and it doesnt seem to have changed much over the years.cheers Mark
Hi Mark ( noisey jake), thanks for your reply, as it happens I did my class 1 there at the sweet age of 21 in 1981 with Heads of the Valley’s of Gilwern. I had previously spent many a nervuos moment there with my cousin putting our families trucks through plating. The old smoke test was a favourite with the white board. The last time I was there was in 1989 with my own 2035 Merc, for a operators license inspection, to check I was servicing my listed vehicles and carrying out inspections etc etc. Fairplay, they went through all my paperwork, and a white coat went through the tractor as if it was due for plating and gave me the all clear. In fact he praised me, on a well presented motor.
I noticed you said you worked for Glyn John Transport (no relation), one of the boys from Rhymney went to work there when HY- MAC closed, Jeff Williams. At that time they were doing the nappy work from Tafarnubach with curtainsiders and Ivecos. Iirc it was Celatose ?
Cheers Paul

now this is an oddball machine an american built ccc, owned by walls recovery newport.come on mechanic77 mate, tell us all about it,cause i ain’t gotta clue about this one.

I remember when we were all running around to pose those pictures for a company brochure. Despite the CCC badge the truck is an AM General, ex US military I think they went over to Holland to get it. It was still in drab green when I started there and after being repainted, rewired and fitted with a bigger pin fifth wheel [ex Dunkerley] it was put to the job it was bought for pulling the big trailer.
It had a Caterpillar engine and semi auto gearbox which may also have been Cat too. Inside was typical bare military spec and I remember the cooling fan made a lot of noise when it kicked in as you were going along.
The trailer was a [king?] lowloader which was much modified by Steve Youngs at Syren, it featured rear steering, onboard engine to power the hydraulics and the ability to load from either end by the neck folding flat or more usually the huge folding ramp at the back.
It was conceived for the purpose of carrying artics which it did many times as well as some mobile cranes.
I believe it was sold to a dealer and then exported to the middle east. Heres another picture.

Heres a slightly smaller Walls truck.

Hi Mark, the instructor I had was Ray, he had driven for Cyril Williams of Brynmawr when they ran out of Ebbw Vale. A few years later I did my class 1 psv in an old RVDC Leyland double decker, I forget that guys name but they both were hooked on the tea in the cafe in the Red + White bus depot in Cwmbran.
The steel pipes were Natural Gas Tubes, GJT and John Raymond were always fighting for that work, previously it had been handled by 3 small hauliers one of which was my cousin who had 2 four wheelers and 1 artic with 2 trls in there. I used swap trls at night so he could get away early the next day. I was a teenager at the time, and only drove on the este, but thats how you learned in them days.
You are right about Jeff he was either your friend or enemy, RAMBO spot on.
Cheers Paul
