South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

what a load of crap this truck was, though to be fair, with a 14 litre 320 ■■■■■■■ in her she went fairly well,i hated it.

joint subbie dai. howells ran this daf,i think?joint’s bought it and used it as a shunter, they were very well liked for shunting,as they were very light.

they bought this 2035 second hand from gullivers truck rental in cardiff,i painted it and it was given to long serving shrewsbury driver, warwick gittens.

sorry boys,you can’t have enough g800 photos!

i had a lift to wall’s truck services in newport to collect this brand new "h"registered 372 man,i then went to newport dock?picked up a loaded trailer and passed everything and everybody on the way back to the yard!

Dave the Renegade:
Just thought about it Andrew the Leominster bypass wouldn’t make any difference,as you wouldn’t touch it coming from the Brecon direction, only way you gain is not having to wait at the lights in Leominster, also if the train is coming at Onibury, but it is a narrow lot up through Wigmore and especially at Adforton.
Cheers Dave.

hi dave,
from what my father tells me that joint’s and other firms used it all the time in the 60’s to avoid ludlow, the bypass opened around 1986/7?is the quarry still open near adforton?that was why we had to move that coil on a sunday as they wouldn’t close the road during the week.
regards andrew

Hi Andrew,
Missed this post the other day,yes the quarry near Wigmore is still open, run by Ennstone/Johnson nowadays, been fairly quiet as far as I know, but probably busy again now. Here’s one of the regular hauliers just come out from there onto the A4110.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Andrew, F372 was the last vehicle I closed a rental contract on at Gullivers. She had been with Scottish & Newcastle whilst theirs was being MOT’d. It was one of the first tractors to go into the Cardiff fleet when they were based off east tyndall st, along with Merc 814 box vans and Ford Cargo flatbeds. She looks nice there in her second life, where no doubt she earned her keep.
Cheers Paul

Hiya …Before the bypass was opened around Whichurch (15 years ago ish)someone chucked a coil off on the sharp bend/bridge and the coil rolled 15/20ft
down a embankment by the waterboard house no truck to be seen was that a Joint motor■■? Desert driver will remember it.
I had a coil on out of Runcorn dock one day. John Ofarrel booked me to do it (short trailer)this coil was 2ft 6ins wide and 7ft 9ins high 22 tons.
it was the days before you had wells by law. I had 2 irons and two 3ft long 6x6 timbers 4 dogs and chains wow did i take it easy Runcorn to Longton steel
in Stoke.

hi john,
it could have been one of joint’s mis-haps.they moved a collosal amount of steel over the years.the only steel drop i remember in stoke, was james and tatton.

Hi boys
Sorry John was that at Sandford been quite a few incidents there.I remember a coil at the end of the moor on the A525 halfway between Ruthin and Wrexham. It was there for months. Also dos anyone remember a coil coming out of the side of a tilt just south of Chester on the A41 by the black dog pub killing the driver of an oncoming car.It had been loaded in Shotton with no well and blocked with timbers. This was the company that under cut our rate by 50% but took twice as long to do the job…Sorry still bitter after 25 years :imp:

Regards Keith

Hi John,I’m butting in here but I’d go for Burnholme Contracts going by that desciption, they did a lot of coils.

hi all,
here’s joint motorways driver trevor williams leaving the yard and heading for dover loaded with abbey coil.e235 vep was driven from new by peter lewis and then passed to trucknet member sammy dog.

Hi boys
Sorry John 1991
Did coils for 10 years out of Shotton don’t know how you could loose one once in the well. I know large ones would not sit very deep but used to nail a skid along the sides if really bad incase of a rough crossing.

Regards Keith.

here’s joint’s first 1735 merc. j200 jmh driven by peter hardy and anyone who was on nights.this truck as did any truck peter hardy had did a huge mileage, peter was a very early starter and every day,day in,day out, week in week out he did the same job.1 a.m. leave the yard with a bulker loaded with coil for shotton, tip that, then reload loose scrap at shotton for port talbot, drop that in the abbey and return solo to the yard.he’d be home by 2p.m.then a night man would come in and do another northwest trip.

j400 jmh was based in shrewsbury and driven by warwick gittens, this was the first 3.8 metre tractor joint’s bought.

everything in this photo was brand new.k222 jmh,jm11 and even the sheet over the coil.k222 was also based in shrewsbury and driven by foreman cliff ashley.this was the last 1735 joint’s bought, after this the 17 series became 18 series and the 35 was replaced with the 38.

Hi Keith…That coil came of at the Raven side of town.you know the duel carrigeway ended at the roudabout near the antiques place and you come straight into
town but wasen’t there a bend and the waterworks was on the left down an embankment before you come to that other roundabout where you turn left and
come out by the rocking hourse roundabout.
The last big one i remember at Sandford bridge was that Paddy waggon with the 25 ton of Muscles they was everywhere
That one was a mess remember the pig waggon going over just north of Grinley brook.
