hi boys,
in all fairness dennis, you are right.if you wiped the lights on the trailer and some of the juice ran onto your gloves 5 mins. later the whole cab would stink!remember we didn’t have posh side lockers on sk mercs.a guy called phil barber who did a fair amount of european for joint’s fell into the hopper when tipping at treeforest,no harm done done, but f…k did he stink!strange that you should mention steel being kept on trailers?this is what happened when a 26 tonner was thrown of one of joints coilers by shrewsbury nightman geoff passant (r.i.p.) on the back road shortcut from monkland to craven arms (dave the renegade country),i know i’ve posted this 1st shot way back earlier on,though now i have found my missing joints albums,i can bore you all with the complete set.
regards andrew

the chap in the yellow was a joint’s fitter, malcom davies, about 7 or 8 of us were on hand to clear the carnage.

it was at the bottom of a very steep bank.would have been an awesome sight to see that 26 tonner flying!

former shrewsbury driver roger grafton loading the coil for a trip back to the abbey.

all’s well that ends well

Hi Andrew,
A lot used that as a shortcut before the Leominster and Ludlow bypasses were built, come off the A4112 then up the A4110 through Wigmore to Leintwardine out through Clungunford under Broome railway bridge on to Craven Arms,a few still use it,but its better to stick on the main drag these days.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,Coastal Roadways showed me that back whack from Craven Arms to Swansea etc. in the 70s

Hiya Andrew gruesome shots these and that tearaway Sammy is b********g me for suggesting Joints were —not up to my standards!!! then you put some shots on like these ! He should crawl back under his Tarpaulin and keep stumm !!! Dennis.

hi dave,
yes bang on mate, most of the shrewsbury nightmen used to use it as they would turn the lights off and know that the road ahead was clear!joints used to get phone calls from irate residents complaining about the noise, they used to tell drivers pulling bulkers not to use it because of the noise factor.i did use that route many times and still do now as my peterbilt will fit under the 12 foot 9 inch bridge.though it’s probably quicker to go around these days.
regards andrew

Just thought about it Andrew the Leominster bypass wouldn’t make any difference,as you wouldn’t touch it coming from the Brecon direction, only way you gain is not having to wait at the lights in Leominster, also if the train is coming at Onibury, but it is a narrow lot up through Wigmore and especially at Adforton.
Cheers Dave.

hi dave,
from what my father tells me that joint’s and other firms used it all the time in the 60’s to avoid ludlow, the bypass opened around 1986/7?is the quarry still open near adforton?that was why we had to move that coil on a sunday as they wouldn’t close the road during the week.

If I have to come clean and even put some of my Sy shots on the site I suppose I should put them on the South Wales thread then they will feel at home !! and not spoil the Bewick thread !! This one was bad luck as the driver had eased over for a car and had lost it in the soft verge ! ( he should have T*d the poxy car) .Bewick.

Hi Trev and Andrew,
The Engine and Tender is still there, never been in that pub,did stop on my way back tonight from Oswestry at the Travellers Rest just north of Craven Arms where we had a nice carvery,no ale just a pot of tea,as I was driving.
Cheers Dave.

When I see a picture of a truck on its side or a load being recovered I just hope the driver is ok . Everything else is fixable or replaceable.
