South Wales Hauliers sixties and seventies onwards (Part 1)

Your right about the high tailgate Dave

Andrew ( sorry a bit off topic ) but is Jason Dean still running any for a living? I saw a Volvo with his name on it up for sale in a mag a couple of weeks ago. Getting back to Joe’s the ones with you that didn’t get served that day were the lucky ones.

cheers

John.

hi john,
dean’s are running around 25 trucks still.jason recentley sold his restored f10 globetrotter to a chap from northants.it’s such a shame when a business like greasy joe’s goes that way, they have been there for 30 years that i know of,i get the impression that they just don’t want to be there anymore…maybe they do or don’t it’s just the impression i get.the guys that didn’t get served that day all went over to macdonald’s.
regards andrew

hi all,
time for more of dai bootsy’s photo collection.swansea based morris bros.were a large concern.they had tippers, low loaders and everything else in between.they traded very succesfuly for a very long time,if i am totally honest i can’t remember when they ceased trading,i would guess around the mid-80’s? cheers bootsy.

my mate jason williams, whose scania and daf have been on here before has just sold this 80th anniversary fh16 660.it’s due to be replaced with something particularly special this summer.

last week jason was near zeebrugge when he saw this.

fortunatley the driver was fine.

when i saw this image, that’s when i found out it was a daf, because i saw cf on the front.

He was one lucky bloke to get out of that alive Andrew.
Cheers Dave.

thanks for the images jason, maenhout are a very well established belgian haulier whose landmark yard is on the side of the e40 as you leave ostende, many years ago they worked closely with bridgend based john raymond transport, when j.r. was doing around 100 channel crossings every week.as far as i am aware j.r. don’t go abroad anymore?

I remember this happening in Dunkirk, coming off th Sally line, probably the 16.30 Sunday ferry’,dark so must have been winter. To get out of the dock area you had to cross a level crossing,a frig artic(can’t remember firm) had been hit by a shunt train, trailer wrecked, think the unit was OK,the driver certainly was.Year 1992ish.

I saw a similar incident to this late 70’s in Austin’s Longbridge works, someone left an S 39 Foden artic by the steel bays at the top of a hill during dinner break. The driver came out of the canteen to see it just rolling off by itself, he was too far away to chase it but its escape to freedom was halted by a transporter train going through the crossing. The cab exploded into a thousand pieces and quite a few new mini’s on the train were trashed.

hi trevh,
yes trains tend to do collosal damage to any road vehicles  .i remember going to longbridge as a kid on school holidays delivering coil, the production line went over the top of the main road.all gone now off course.probably a bloody supermarket.

Once again great pic’s and content by everyone. Andrew fair play to you and Daibootsy. Martyn I remember Shillibiers Bison fitted with a Withey steel body and spill boards, the driver was about 6 ft 6 and got in and out gingerly. I must agree those Dafs were comfortable and good motors.
Wales v France is on tv in an hour, fingers crossed.
