I just didn’t rate RR diesels both from an operators experience and also what I gathered from other operators over the years I was in the buisness . I remember the ERF sales director telling me that ERF took 1500 Gardners,1000 ■■■■■■■ and 500 RR per year. The bulk of the RR chassis going to the big Oil cos as economy/reliability was not high on their agenda – just the net price of the vehicle !! Bewick.

hi dennis,
i totally agree with you,i recall my father telling me that when he was driving for joint motorways during 1969 they bought three 6 by 2 atki. units,in preparation for the weight increase which didn’t happen until 1983,anyway,they had rollers in them and they were useless, they couldn’t live with the e registered two pedal beaver my old man had and when the rollers went wrong it was a costly business.after that joints still bought gardners but mainly ■■■■■■■■
regards andrew

Yea Andrew I believe the RR engined chassis only sold for 3 main reasons 1 It must be a decent motor because its a RR. 2 "Please buy one off me Mr.Operator as the Factory are twisting my arm to shift some ( and I’ll make sure you get a chance of a Gardner or two in my next allocation Promise !! ) 3 The RR chassis is on a special price at the moment 25% discount ( but don’t tell anybody as I’m doing you a big favour !) Then when the salesman got his order for 3 (in Joints case ) he then couldn’t get out of the office fast enough and round the corner as he wouldn’t be able to keep his face straight !! and then he’d ps his self laughing !! But the smile would soon be wiped off his face when the "chickens started coming home to roost " and he got bollocking after bollocking from the extremely P*ed off Operator !! How does that senario sound Andrew !! Cheers Dennis.

You main road artic monkeys didn’t know you were born, you should have had a few years on tippers off the beaten track,no rolls royce or gardner engines, just cheap Bedford or Perkins under powered moters with not enough gears. Come from Port Talbot to just before the Storey Arms with a boiling engine, carry water from a brook to put in the radiator whilst the engine is still running,to stop it spewing boiling water over you. They should have made an advert featuring us tipper boys for Hovis Bread,we had it much harder than that kid pushing the bike on a cobbled street, phew.
Cheers tired old Dave.

Now Dave my Lad I’ve carried my share of water !! at one point when I was on the Octopus every time we stopped it needed topping up and you couldn’t see where it was losing water then one evening we were going north up Wolverhampton new road(loaded with 20 ton of S. Wales finest) and it started boiling big time and we came to a stop outside the Nick ! So I plucked up courage and went in !!! I told Plod on the desk what the trouble was and asked for some hot water no probs go and help yourself young fella you’ll find a bucket in the back !! I can remember quite clearly as I had to go past the cells and they had someone banged up who asked me for a cig ! I said I didn’t sorry and He gave me a right gobfull !! anyway I topped the old girl up and do you know what it never boiled again as long as I was on it ( or use much water for that matter) Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
Tk’s at the time I drove one had a problem with boiling, changed thermostat all sorts of thigs, but coming from Glyneath to the top of the Beacons with nearly 10 ton on a low powered moter in the summer was hard work for it,the thing was 5 years old and for a tipper in those days had seen its best days, the firm I worked for had got a new lorry on order and was keeping the TK going on borrowed time until it came, also the plating law had come in,so the days of TK’s were finishing on quarry work. To be fair a lot of operators ran them this way, they were ok if you had a two speed, but on lime and slag the one I had wasn’t up to it,although running loaded to South Wales and back plus another short load after,it was earning as much as the six wheelers.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya Dave is that the South Wales string quartet I can here in the background or just the wind blowing on the Beacons !!! Dennis.

I’m nearer to Hereford than South Wales Dennis, can see Herefordshire through the window, just a mile from the border here.Welsh soil here but thats about all,we have more connection with Herefordshire,as there is no general Hospital in this county,we have to buy all the main services off Herefordshire or Shropshire plus others. This county is in dire straights as told to us by the chairman of the board at ou CC meeting the other night. Can you spare a copper mister. :frowning:
Cheers Dave.

Yea Dave its a right joke the health provision in this country ! We have 3 Hospitals on Morecambe bay and the Health authority have been trying to wind down all the various departments at the newest of the 3 Kendal but there is strong resistance because if you live in say Grasmere its a ■■■■ long way to Lancaster or Barrow !! Its a shame but I know a guy who was an electrician at old Kendal Hospital and when they were commisioning the the new one he told me it had been a big mistake and if the Health Trust could have got out from under they would never have built another Hospital in in Kendal with hindsight !! Cheers Dennis.PS which side of Offas Dyke do you live then ?

They are going to shut about 7 schools in this county and build about 4 new one’s,because of falling pupil numbers, there’s a drop in the birthrate is the reason,no bloody wonder, there’s no work in Mid Wales, apart from the county council offices. :smiling_imp:
Cheers Dave.
