Hi Andrew,
Is he the guy from Letterston thats featured in the trucking mags a couple of times.
Cheers Dave.

hi dave,
yes i would say thats him.he has been in business a long time, this ex peter roff f16 was ran by peter harding for a long time, she’s now owned by my mate keith storey from newcastle upon tyne, quite unusual in that it is on air all round, don’t think volvo made many of them? hey dennis? didthey make a guy with a 240 in it on air all round    ? sorry.

another of peter harding’s gems.back in 1997 i photographed the “remains” of this truck in hardings yard, the doors had fallen off and the floor was rotting so badly that the whole thing was sagging, yet it still looked pig f…g ugly.

Now now Andrew, you must not wind older people up,you must have been fraternising with carryfast, goodness knows what will happen if Dennis reads this thread, although I think he is mellowing in old age. :open_mouth:
Cheers Dave.

Oh ok then  .

C970 HFC was originally a 6x4 heavy haulage tractor operated by Dunkerley near Bristol [blue cab red chassis]. They replaced it in the early 90’s with a bigger MAN 6x6 and Walls truck services of Newport acquired it. They were MAN dealers and had a number of other MAN wreckers in various sizes.
The chassis was stretched and a self tracking second axle was added. It was named Master of disaster and featured in Trucking magazine not long after.

The recovery gear was custom built by Steve Youngs SYREN engineering who had previously worked on some of Walls earlier trucks such as the Freightliner Black beauty.

The truck is well known in the recovery industry and at the time was really something special, arguably the first of the UK’s trend for big rotating crane recovery trucks predating the North American imports.

It held a good reputation based on its capabilities and attended a huge number of big incidents over the years [it even made it onto a national newspaper cover whilst at a coach crash in Raglan]

Eventually Walls bought an NRC equipped sliding rotator on an 8x4 Kenworth in 2000 and this paved the way for MoD to be sold on.

It has since been red and operated by Billington bros in the North Wales area and laterly white and ran by Robinsons of Bolton.

Walls later replaced their Kenworth with a Volvo FH16 rotator.

pete 359:
here’s one for chris 143,a “slightly damaged” bridgend brs scania.

hi chris,
i think you will find that she’s a 111 mate, she looks like the higher cab?
regards andrew

sammy dog:

ileft davies bros and went to work for shillibiers first truck a lend only volvo 86 it had been in griffin mill ponty for gearbox under warranty i beleive he bought it as an ex demo after that i got the bison on the right thats me with ntx 949r which he bought new must have been loads of work then.

hi martyn,
do you remember roger d trucking volvo f88.it was always parked in shillibier’s old yard during early/mid-80’s.she was red and gold, then black it later was owned by dennis seabourne. it was brand new to j.r. the only f88 they ever had.i found a photo of it the other night,my scanners kippered at the moment so once i invest in a new one i will post it.
regards andrew

A Mk.2 Atkinson ‘Silver Knight’ with a 220 Rolls Royce Eagle and ZF 6-speed box.
Superb photo but a lousy engine under the bonnet !! Bewick.

Photo courtesy Atkinson Vehicles, engine not something with which Henry Royce would associate

I just didn’t rate RR diesels both from an operators experience and also what I gathered from other operators over the years I was in the buisness . I remember the ERF sales director telling me that ERF took 1500 Gardners,1000 ■■■■■■■ and 500 RR per year. The bulk of the RR chassis going to the big Oil cos as economy/reliability was not high on their agenda – just the net price of the vehicle !! Bewick.

hi dennis,
i totally agree with you,i recall my father telling me that when he was driving for joint motorways during 1969 they bought three 6 by 2 atki. units,in preparation for the weight increase which didn’t happen until 1983,anyway,they had rollers in them and they were useless, they couldn’t live with the e registered two pedal beaver my old man had and when the rollers went wrong it was a costly business.after that joints still bought gardners but mainly ■■■■■■■■
regards andrew

Yea Andrew I believe the RR engined chassis only sold for 3 main reasons 1 It must be a decent motor because its a RR. 2 "Please buy one off me Mr.Operator as the Factory are twisting my arm to shift some ( and I’ll make sure you get a chance of a Gardner or two in my next allocation Promise !! ) 3 The RR chassis is on a special price at the moment 25% discount ( but don’t tell anybody as I’m doing you a big favour !) Then when the salesman got his order for 3 (in Joints case ) he then couldn’t get out of the office fast enough and round the corner as he wouldn’t be able to keep his face straight !! and then he’d ps his self laughing !! But the smile would soon be wiped off his face when the "chickens started coming home to roost " and he got bollocking after bollocking from the extremely P*ed off Operator !! How does that senario sound Andrew !! Cheers Dennis.

You main road artic monkeys didn’t know you were born, you should have had a few years on tippers off the beaten track,no rolls royce or gardner engines, just cheap Bedford or Perkins under powered moters with not enough gears. Come from Port Talbot to just before the Storey Arms with a boiling engine, carry water from a brook to put in the radiator whilst the engine is still running,to stop it spewing boiling water over you. They should have made an advert featuring us tipper boys for Hovis Bread,we had it much harder than that kid pushing the bike on a cobbled street, phew.
Cheers tired old Dave.

Now Dave my Lad I’ve carried my share of water !! at one point when I was on the Octopus every time we stopped it needed topping up and you couldn’t see where it was losing water then one evening we were going north up Wolverhampton new road(loaded with 20 ton of S. Wales finest) and it started boiling big time and we came to a stop outside the Nick ! So I plucked up courage and went in !!! I told Plod on the desk what the trouble was and asked for some hot water no probs go and help yourself young fella you’ll find a bucket in the back !! I can remember quite clearly as I had to go past the cells and they had someone banged up who asked me for a cig ! I said I didn’t sorry and He gave me a right gobfull !! anyway I topped the old girl up and do you know what it never boiled again as long as I was on it ( or use much water for that matter) Cheers Dennis.
